Milan, Italy (Metro Rail Today): Webuild has secured a major new contract for Rome Metro Line C, further reinforcing its global leadership in metro systems and sustainable urban mobility. The Group, leading the Metro C Consortium alongside Vianini Lavori, has been awarded Section T1, a strategic underground link between Clodio/Mazzini and Farnesina stations in the northern quadrant of the Italian capital.
The total value of the contract stands at €776 million, of which €268 million is Webuild’s share. The award follows closely on the heels of recent international wins by the Group, including metro expansion projects in Riyadh and Naples, underscoring Webuild’s strong momentum in the global urban transport sector.
The contract award comes shortly after the public opening of Colosseo/Fori Imperiali and Porta Metronia stations in December—two iconic “archaeo-stations” that added 3 km to Line C and enabled an interchange with Line B. These stations exemplify the consortium’s ability to overcome complex engineering challenges while safeguarding Rome’s unparalleled archaeological heritage.
Along the stretch from Monte Compatri/Pantano in eastern Rome to Clodio/Mazzini, more than 625,000 cubic metres of archaeological excavations have been managed, transforming construction sites into opportunities for cultural enhancement—now a hallmark of Webuild’s work in historic urban environments.
Section T1 will be delivered through an integrated design-and-build approach and developed in coordination with Section T2, which is currently in the executive design phase and includes the first-ever crossing of the Tiber River for Rome Metro Line C.
Awarding Section T1 to the same consortium will allow continuous mechanised excavation from Farnesina toward Piazza Venezia, avoiding fragmentation of works and ensuring construction efficiency. Meanwhile, construction activities at Venezia Station are progressing as part of the project’s second macro phase.
Once fully completed, Metro Line C will span 29 kilometres with 31 stations, connecting Monte Compatri/Pantano in the east to Farnesina in the north-west. To date, 24 stations are already operational, reaching as far as Colosseo/Fori Imperiali in the historic centre of Rome.
The Rome contract adds to Webuild’s extensive global portfolio, which now includes over 890 kilometres of metro lines built worldwide. The Group is currently involved in landmark metro projects across Europe, Latin America, and Australia, and continues to play a pivotal role in Italy’s urban rail development.
With the award of Section T1, Webuild once again demonstrates its capability to deliver technologically advanced, sustainable metro infrastructure, even in some of the world’s most complex and heritage-sensitive urban settings.
