New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major push to strengthen India’s critical digital infrastructure, Airtel Business has been awarded a multi-year contract by the Indian Railway Security Operations Centre (IRSOC) to deliver cutting-edge cybersecurity services across the country’s expansive and digitally reliant railway network.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in protecting the world’s fourth-largest rail network, which serves over 20 million daily commuters, operates 13,000+ trains, processes millions of digital transactions, and transports over 1.5 billion tons of freight annually.
“Cybersecurity is now foundational to operational continuity, data integrity, and passenger safety,” said Sharat Sinha, CEO & Director – Airtel Business. “We are proud to partner with IRSOC to build a resilient, AI-powered, and sovereign cybersecurity framework for Indian Railways.”
With over 160,000 employees and operations spanning 26+ locations, Indian Railways increasingly relies on digital systems for ticketing, freight management, train tracking, and signalling. Airtel Business will implement a centralized, AI-driven security ecosystem using a mix of global and Make in India cybersecurity technologies.
The contract includes a full suite of advanced services such as:
Unified compliance and visibility across all security tools and locations via a centralised dashboard
AI-powered Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions for 190,000+ critical assets
Advanced patch and vulnerability management with real-time monitoring
Machine learning–based SIEM, SOAR, and UEBA systems for rapid threat detection and neutralization
Proactive dark web and threat intelligence monitoring
Robust network access controls, including firewalls, routers, and MPLS networks
Airtel Business aims to deliver a mean-time-to-detect (MTTD) of under 20 seconds, setting new standards in real-time threat management for critical infrastructure.
Commenting on the strategic importance of the project, Dilip Kumar, EDIP — Railway Board, stated:
“Given the increasing digitalization of operations, cybersecurity is vital for the smooth functioning of Indian Railways. IRSOC will enable us to monitor, detect, and respond to cyber threats centrally while improving service delivery and ensuring uninterrupted operations for passengers.”
The IRSOC will serve as a centralized command center for cybersecurity, ensuring continuous oversight and integration with national cybersecurity agencies for collaborative threat mitigation.
With this initiative, Indian Railways moves closer to building a secure and future-ready digital infrastructure, aligned with the goals of Digital India, Make in India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
“This partnership reflects Indian Railways' commitment to secure its critical digital backbone as it advances into the next phase of smart transportation,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. “Airtel Secure's robust architecture is a strategic enabler for ensuring digital trust at scale.”
The IRSOC contract positions Airtel Business as a key player in safeguarding India's critical infrastructure and elevates Indian Railways’ cybersecurity maturity to global benchmarks. As rail networks become smarter and more connected, this partnership is a timely intervention to ensure data security, operational resilience, and passenger safety across the nation’s most essential transport system.
