Alstom commences production of Rolling Stock coaches for Delhi Metro Phase 4

New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride towards revolutionizing Delhi's metro network, Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has started the production of 52 state-of-the-art Metropolis trainsets for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Phase IV. Valued at 312 million euros, this transformative project signifies a key partnership between Alstom and DMRC, aiming to enhance connectivity and redefine the passenger experience in the national capital.

The commencement of production, marked by a ceremonial event attended by leaders from DMRC and Alstom India, underscores the strategic importance of this venture. Awarded in November 2022, the project aims to deliver 52 train sets, each comprising six cars, catering to three different lines of DMRC. These include extensions of the existing Line 7 and Line 8, and the introduction of the new Gold Line 10, spanning a total distance of 64.67 km.

Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, expressed the significance of this milestone, stating, “The Delhi metro stands as the lifeline of our city, and the addition of new routes will greatly enhance connectivity in the national capital. We are glad to know that Alstom is commencing the production of Metro trains for the Delhi Metro’s fourth phase of expansion. We are sure that the new age trains will ensure a smooth and comfortable ride for the passengers.”

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, emphasized the company's pride in contributing to India's largest metro network. He stated, “Our Metropolis metros have a noteworthy track record, low lifecycle cost, and keen focus on passenger experience, and we are honoured to be building these modern trains for the commuters in Delhi NCR, further promoting the transition towards sustainable mass mobility solutions.”

The total project value encompasses the production and maintenance of 13 trainsets for a period of 15 years, marking a significant outsourcing milestone for Delhi Metro as it partners with an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for maintenance. The extensions on Line 8 and Line 7 are set to enhance connectivity, while Alstom's involvement extends to providing the train-control and signalling solution for Delhi MRTS Phase-IV.

The Metropolis trains, designed under the 'Make in India' initiative, boast a unique design, a wide range of configurations, and superior performance. With a safe speed of 95 kmph and operational speed of 85 kmph, these trains are equipped with GOA 4 driverless features, ensuring an environmentally friendly and comfortable metro solution for the passengers of New Delhi.

Inspired by the tricolours of the Indian national flag, the interior of the trains will feature door pillars adorned with a mix of saffron, white, and green paint. Line 10's front will be distinct with a metallic gold paint, a first for Alstom in a metro project in India. This design innovation aligns with Alstom's commitment to the 'Make in India' initiative.

The entire design and manufacturing process of these Metropolis trains will unfold at Alstom's largest Urban Rolling Stock manufacturing site in India, located in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. This site, a stronghold of Alstom's successful delivery for major domestic and international projects, operates under the 'Make in India' ethos.

Alstom's partnership with DMRC spans over the years, with the company delivering over 800 metro cars currently in use across Delhi's expansive metro system. Their collaboration has extended to various projects, including the successful implementation of train control and signalling systems for multiple lines during Phases I, II, and III.

Alstom's commencement of production for the DMRC Phase IV is more than just a project; it's a leap into the future of sustainable and efficient metro solutions for India's capital. As these Metropolis trains roll off the assembly line, Delhi's metro commuters can anticipate a new era of connectivity, speed, and eco-friendly travel.
