CMRS conducts safety inspection of priority section of Patna Metro Rail Project

Patna, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant milestone for Bihar’s urban transport ambitions, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), Shri Janak Kumar Garg, has completed a comprehensive inspection of the Patna Metro Rail project, marking the final step before the metro system can be opened to the public.

The inspection, conducted over the priority corridor of Line 2, focused on ensuring technical readiness, infrastructure safety, and passenger preparedness—a crucial requirement before commercial operations can begin.

Key Areas of CMRS Inspection

The CMRS team carried out a rigorous assessment of the following components:

Rolling Stock Trial

A trial run was conducted with trains operating at 40 km/h, where technical aspects such as stability, braking systems, and control mechanisms were closely monitored. This inspection ensures that the rolling stock is compliant with national safety and quality standards.

Depot and Stations

The inspection extended to the Patna Metro depot and three major stations on the priority stretch. The CMRS reviewed:

  • Maintenance infrastructure

  • Emergency response systems

  • Firefighting installations

  • Track and signaling integration

Passenger Amenities

The team also evaluated station accessibility and commuter experience, including:

  • Escalators and elevators

  • Ticketing counters and AFC gates

  • Platform safety features

  • Information display systems

Safety First: Final Approval Underway

At a high-level review meeting following the inspection, CMRS Janak Kumar Garg reiterated that public safety is non-negotiable. He instructed project stakeholders—including DMRC, PMC, and contractors—to rectify minor gaps and ensure all safety protocols are strictly enforced before opening the system for public service.

Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, commended the progress, “The successful CMRS inspection demonstrates Patna Metro’s readiness to redefine public mobility in Bihar. With safety and commuter experience at the core, this project marks a transformational leap in sustainable urban development.”

A Modern Mobility Milestone for Patna

The Patna Metro will be the city’s first mass rapid transit system, designed to ease traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and provide affordable, high-capacity urban transport. The Phase 1 project includes:

  • Line 1: Danapur – Khemni Chak (16.86 km)

  • Line 2: Patna Junction – New ISBT (14.05 km), including elevated and underground sections

The priority corridor inspected by CMRS is part of Line 2, featuring key stations like Malahi Pakri, Bhootnath, Zero Mile, and New ISBT.

What’s Next?

Pending the CMRS certification, the Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)—the project’s executing agency—are expected to announce the commercial launch date later this month. Once operational, Patna will join other Indian cities with functioning metro systems, bringing modern infrastructure to the heart of eastern India.

The successful CMRS inspection brings Patna Metro to the brink of reality. With its first phase almost ready and final safety clearances underway, the city is poised to welcome a new era of smart, safe, and sustainable public transport that aligns with the Government of India’s urban mobility mission.
