Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): Chennai Metro Rail’s expansion towards South Chennai has received a major boost with the Tamil Nadu government approving the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Airport–Kilambakkam Metro Corridor. The new line is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Chennai International Airport and the rapidly developing southern suburbs of the city.
The 15.46-km elevated metro corridor, estimated to cost around ₹9,335 crore, will feature 13 stations and connect several high-density residential, commercial, and transport hubs across South Chennai.
The proposed corridor will run through some of Chennai’s busiest suburban stretches, where traffic congestion has become a persistent challenge due to rapid urban expansion and increasing commuter movement.
Key proposed stations along the route include Chennai Airport, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, Vandalur, Arignar Anna Zoological Park, and Kilambakkam Bus Terminus.
The corridor is strategically designed to integrate three major transport hubs — Chennai International Airport, Tambaram Railway Station, and the Kilambakkam Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus — through a single seamless metro connection.
Urban mobility experts believe the project will substantially reduce travel time and improve public transport accessibility for thousands of daily commuters travelling between Chennai city and its southern suburbs.
According to officials, preliminary activities for the project have already progressed significantly. Route alignment studies, land surveys, and planning exercises have largely been completed, enabling the project to move towards the implementation phase.
The Tamil Nadu government has also approved land acquisition for the corridor, which is considered a critical step in accelerating project execution.
Authorities are currently coordinating with multiple agencies, including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), airport authorities, and the Chennai Metro Water Board, to facilitate smooth project development and utility integration.
The elevated nature of the corridor is expected to minimise land constraints while ensuring faster construction timelines across the densely populated suburban sections.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “The Airport–Kilambakkam Metro Corridor will play a transformative role in improving multimodal connectivity across South Chennai. Integrating airport access, suburban railway connectivity, and intercity bus transit through metro infrastructure reflects a forward-looking approach towards sustainable and integrated urban mobility.”
The Airport–Kilambakkam corridor forms part of Chennai Metro’s broader expansion strategy aimed at improving urban mobility across the metropolitan region. South Chennai, particularly areas like Tambaram, Vandalur, and Kilambakkam, has witnessed rapid residential and commercial growth over the past decade, resulting in rising transportation demand.
The Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, one of the largest intercity bus terminals in Tamil Nadu, is expected to become a major passenger hub once connected to the metro network.
The project is also expected to support transit-oriented development and reduce dependency on private vehicles by offering a faster and more reliable public transport alternative.
Chennai Metro continues to emerge as one of India’s fastest-growing metro systems, with multiple new corridors currently under development under Phase-II expansion.
Across India, metro rail projects are increasingly focusing on multimodal integration, airport connectivity, and suburban expansion to address urbanisation challenges and improve commuter convenience.
The approval of the Airport–Kilambakkam Metro Corridor marks another important milestone in Chennai’s urban transport transformation and is expected to further strengthen the city’s position as a leading metro rail network in South India.
