Alstom, Larsen & Toubro unveil First Driverless Trainset for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A

Sri City, India (Rail & Metro Today): Alstom has unveiled the first Metropolis metro trainset for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A at its manufacturing facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Developed in a record 14 months, the trainset marks a significant milestone in the expansion of Mumbai's metro network and the delivery of advanced, locally manufactured urban rail technology.

The unveiling took place in the presence of dignitaries from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which is executing the Integrated Systems Package for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A. Alstom is supplying 39 driverless metro trainsets along with signalling solutions, depot equipment and maintenance services as part of the project.

The new trains are being developed to support the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) vision of a connected, efficient and sustainable urban transport network. The project brings together Alstom's expertise in rolling stock and rail systems with L&T's capabilities in large-scale engineering, procurement, construction and systems integration.

39 Driverless Trainsets to Support Mumbai Metro Expansion

The first trainset is the initial delivery under the programme to supply 39 trains for Metro Lines 4 and 4A. These corridors form part of Mumbai's wider metro expansion strategy, aimed at improving connectivity across the metropolitan region and providing commuters with alternatives to road-based transport.

The project involves more than manufacturing rolling stock. The integrated package includes signalling, depot equipment and maintenance, which are essential to ensuring that trains operate safely and efficiently within the wider metro system.

The trainset was designed in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and manufactured at Alstom's Sri City facility. Its propulsion systems come from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, while the bogies are supplied from Savli, Gujarat. This multi-location manufacturing approach demonstrates the participation of several Indian industrial centres in the development of advanced metro technology.

With substantial localisation, the programme supports the Government of India's Make in India initiative and the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. It also highlights the growing capabilities of India's railway manufacturing ecosystem in supplying sophisticated equipment for urban transit projects.

Passenger Comfort, Accessibility and Sustainable Mobility

The new Metropolis trains have been designed to combine modern technology with passenger-focused features suited to Mumbai's urban transport requirements. The trains have a design speed of 90 km/h and an operational speed of 80 km/h.

Passenger amenities include airflow-based cooling and wheelchair accessibility, supporting a more comfortable and inclusive travel experience. The trainset also features dedicated bicycle racks, which Alstom describes as a first for its trains in India. The provision is intended to encourage multimodal journeys by allowing passengers to combine metro travel with cycling for first- and last-mile connectivity.

The trains feature a distinctive green-and-blue exterior identity inspired by MMRDA's vision for a connected and environmentally responsible Mumbai. Alstom has also applied its Eco-design approach, with materials selected in consideration of fire-safety requirements and environmental performance.

Together, these features reflect the increasing emphasis on accessibility, passenger convenience and sustainable mobility in India's metro rail projects.

Alstom and L&T Highlight Integrated Project Delivery

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, said the unveiling represented an important achievement for the company and its continued contribution to Mumbai's urban transport development.

“Our long-standing partnership with Mumbai’s metro network continues to grow and we are proud to consistently deliver next generation rail solutions for the urban metro network in the city. The Mumbai Line 4 & 4A project also establishes our collaboration with L&T to support MMRDA in its metro network expansion, today is a proud moment for us at Alstom to be showcasing the first trainset at a record time,” Loison said.

He added that Alstom was confident its advanced rail products and technologies would contribute to delivering a world-class travel experience for Mumbai's commuters.

S. Ramkumar, Senior Vice President and Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, said the partnership combined L&T's expertise in large-scale EPC execution and systems integration with Alstom's rolling stock capabilities.

He also highlighted L&T's involvement in the power supply and track systems packages for Metro Lines 4 and 4A, noting that coordination among the project partners would be important for integrating the various systems and delivering a reliable commuter service.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said:

“The unveiling of the first Mumbai Metro Line 4 trainset highlights India's growing capabilities in advanced metro manufacturing and railway systems integration. The combination of local engineering, domestic component production and international technology expertise demonstrates the potential of India's manufacturing ecosystem to support increasingly sophisticated urban rail projects. As metro networks expand, timely delivery, passenger comfort, accessibility and reliable system integration will remain essential to building sustainable urban mobility.”

Alstom's Expanding Role in Mumbai's Metro Network

Alstom has an established presence across Mumbai's metro infrastructure. The company supplied Metropolis trainsets and signalling solutions for the Mumbai Metro Aqua Line, which is in commercial operation. It is also providing signalling and telecommunications solutions for Metro Lines 2 and 7, along with signalling systems for Lines 7A and 9.

The latest trainset unveiling adds to the company's involvement in Mumbai's expanding metro network and strengthens its collaboration with L&T on the Line 4 and 4A programme.

As manufacturing and system integration progress, the project will contribute to the broader development of metro connectivity across Greater Mumbai. The successful delivery of the 39 trainsets, together with the associated signalling and depot systems, will be an important part of preparing the corridors for future passenger operations.

The unveiling also underlines the growing importance of domestic manufacturing, technology partnerships and integrated project delivery in India's urban rail sector. With Mumbai continuing to expand its metro infrastructure, projects such as Lines 4 and 4A are expected to play a significant role in improving connectivity and supporting more sustainable travel across the metropolitan region.
