Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): Bengaluru-based BEML Ltd., a leading manufacturer of rail and defence equipment, has secured a significant ₹157 crore contract from Loram Rail Maintenance India Pvt. Ltd. to supply 15 sets (30 cars) of next-generation Switch Rail Grinding Machines (SRGM) for Indian Railways.
The major order marks a strong push toward the modernisation and optimisation of India’s vast railway network, which is undergoing one of the largest infrastructure upgrades in its history.
The newly ordered Switch Rail Grinding Machines are designed to carry out precision grinding of switches and crossings, among the most complex and maintenance-intensive components of railway track systems.
These machines will enable Indian Railways to:
Improve track reliability through precise profiling
Enhance ride quality for passengers
Reduce vibrations and wear, extending the life of critical assets
Minimise maintenance downtime, enabling smoother operations
BEML’s track-maintenance technology is widely used across various metro rail systems and national railway corridors, and this new order further underscores the company’s capability in delivering high-precision, indigenous engineering solutions.
The contract deepens BEML’s collaboration with Loram India, a subsidiary of the global rail maintenance giant Loram, and aligns with Atmanirbhar Bharat goals by promoting local manufacturing and advanced engineering capabilities.
BEML stated that the order reflects the growing demand for specialised on-track maintenance equipment as Indian Railways expands high-speed corridors, dedicated freight operations, and metro rail networks across major cities.
Offering her insights on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said:
“High-precision track-maintenance machinery like the SRGM is essential for India’s rapidly expanding rail ecosystem. This order highlights India’s shift toward proactive asset management using modern, indigenous technologies. BEML’s leadership in this space will significantly contribute to enhancing safety, performance and reliability across the rail network.”
With this ₹157 crore milestone order, BEML reinforces its position as a trusted partner in India’s railway transformation—supporting not just rolling stock and metro systems but now playing a deeper role in lifecycle maintenance and infrastructure optimisation.
As Indian Railways continues its journey toward safer, smarter, and globally competitive operations, modern maintenance equipment such as BEML’s Switch Rail Grinding Machines will form a critical backbone in sustaining next-generation mobility across the country.
