CEG–KNR JV wins General Consultancy contract for Mumbai Metro's Kanjurmarg Depot

Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride towards the expansion of Mumbai's metro network, the Consulting Engineers Group – Korea National Railway (CEG – KNR JV) has emerged victorious as the preferred bidder for the General Consultant (GC) contract of Mumbai Metro Line-6's Kanjurmarg Depot. This pivotal contract, marked as Package CA-208, holds crucial importance in overseeing the construction of the train depot (carshed) at Kanjurmarg.

Mumbai's upcoming 15.18 km elevated Pink Line, connecting Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) to Vikhroli via 13 elevated stations, is a testament to the city's commitment to enhancing its public transportation infrastructure. The recently awarded consultancy contract for Kanjurmarg Depot's GC signifies a crucial phase in the comprehensive development of the metro line.

Situated along the Eastern Expressway Highway (EEH), Kanjurmarg Depot's layout includes 18 stabling lines, 3 inspection bays, 4 workshop bays, an 811 metres long test track, operations control centre (OCC), administrative buildings, and staff quarters. This expansive project aligns with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) vision for a robust and efficient metro rail network.

The competitive bidding process, initiated in September 2023 by MMRDA, witnessed the participation of three notable contenders - RITES Ltd, CEG – KNR JV and ILF Consulting Engineers. Following the opening of technical bids in January 2024, it was revealed that CEG – KNR JV emerged victorious with a bid value of Rs. 20.42 Crore, showcasing both technical prowess and financial viability. The financial positions of the all qualified bidders are as under:-

  • CEG - KNR JV: ₹20.42 crore (L1)
  • RITES Ltd: ₹25.20 crore (L2)

ILF Consulting Engineers faced disqualification due to technical non-compliance, leaving the field open for the remaining contenders. This unique contract, dedicated solely to the depot works, deviates from the conventional metro space practices, as typically, GC contracts are awarded through the Quality and Cost Based System (QCBS) method. However, in this instance, a specific technical or financial score assignment appears unconventional.

The Mumbai Metro Line-6's Kanjurmarg Depot GC contract is anticipated to stay onboard for at least 30 months, aligning with the projected completion duration of the entire project. With technical excellence and a robust financial bid, CEG – KNR JV is set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Mumbai's metro network.

As the city advances towards a more interconnected and efficient public transportation system, the significance of dedicated contracts like the Kanjurmarg Depot GC cannot be overstated. The impending developments in Line-6, including the ongoing bidding process for the systems contract (Package CA-232), underscore Mumbai's commitment to providing world-class metro services.

The successful bid by CEG – KNR JV for the Kanjurmarg Depot's General Consultant contract is a milestone in the expansion of Mumbai's metro network. This strategic move not only signifies technical prowess and financial stability but also heralds a new era of dedicated focus on depot works in metro infrastructure development. As Mumbai gears up for transformative changes in its public transportation landscape, the Kanjurmarg Depot project stands as a testament to the city's dedication to building a modern, efficient, and well-connected metro network.
