Cengrs begins Geotechnical Investigation for Gurugram Metro's HUDA–Cyber City Corridor

Gurugram, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for the transportation infrastructure of Gurugram, Cengrs Geotechnica Pvt. Ltd. has kicked off the geotechnical investigation for the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC)’s new metro line. The commencement was marked by a formal inauguration and groundbreaking ceremony attended by key officials, including S. D. Sharma, Principal Consultant, and Dr. Namrita Kalsi, Chief Architect of HMRTC.

The scope of the contract encompasses conducting geotechnical soil investigation along a 12.76 km stretch of the metro line, specifically from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9. This segment of the elevated corridor holds immense importance within the overall 28.50 km route from Millennium City Centre to Cyber City, with an additional 1.85 km spur to Sector 101 Gurugram. The findings of this geotechnical investigation will play a pivotal role in shaping civil construction tender documents, aiding infrastructure companies in their financial bids, and determining the appropriate machinery, methods, and technology for the construction phase.

Cengrs Geotechnica team expressed their commitment to the project, stating, "The 12.76 km elevated corridor shall have 13 stations. Our scope includes borings to characterize the soils along the alignment. We begin this geotechnical investigation on the right note to ensure the project's success."

They further added, "Working with the motto “We Test Today For Tomorrow's Progress,” we embark on this journey of nation-building with pride and excitement." This endeavor signifies a crucial step towards enhancing transportation infrastructure in Gurugram, ultimately aiming to provide efficient and sustainable commuting solutions for residents and visitors alike.

The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), the special purpose vehicle tasked with executing the metro project, convened its inaugural board meeting on Wednesday. During the meeting, it was decided that the company would appoint a full-time managing director once the model code of conduct is lifted. Additionally, plans were made to initiate a competition for the creation of a new logo and tagline for the Gurugram metro.

The Gurugram Metro extension project is slated to cover a distance of 28.5 kilometers from Huda City Centre to Cyber City, passing through Subhash Chowk, Krishna Chowk, and Sector 22. The route will encompass 27 stops, including an interchange station, with the entire project estimated to cost ₹5,450 crore. Furthermore, a spur to Dwarka Expressway is also planned as part of the project.

Earlier, on February 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the Gurugram metro project in Rewari. A senior government official familiar with the matter stated, "The first board meeting of the GMRL was held today...all formalities related to taking over the project by GMRL from HMRTC were also completed."

Currently, TL Satyaprakash, managing director of the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC), holds the position of managing director of GMRL, while D Thara, additional secretary at the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs, serves as the chairperson.

During the meeting, chairperson D Thara emphasized the importance of transit-oriented development along the proposed metro line. It was agreed that the metro authority would collaborate closely with the department of town and country planning to ensure residents in the hinterland benefit from the metro extension.

Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone for the Gurugram metro extension project from Huda City metro station (now Millennium City Centre metro station) to Cyber Hub, covering the entire old Gurugram, including a spur to the newly-inaugurated Dwarka Expressway.

A geo-technical survey commenced in Gurugram on March 20, with the first borehole dug near the Millennium City metro station. The survey is expected to be completed in four to five months, covering the initial 14 kilometers of the stretch. Plans were also outlined for a logo design competition for the Gurugram metro and the selection of a tagline. Additionally, the decision to appoint a detailed design consultant is expected within a month.

The proposed Gurugram metro project, spanning 28.5 kilometers, will feature 27 elevated metro stations at various locations across the city. Initially conceived in 2017, the project has faced delays due to route alignment changes and the finalization of the detailed project report (DPR). The metro rail in Gurugram has been a long-standing demand of residents, who currently rely heavily on private vehicles for intra-city commuting due to the absence of a quality mass transport system.

The commencement of the geotechnical investigation by Cengrs Geotechnica marks a significant milestone in the development of the HMRTC metro line project. With a strong commitment to quality and progress, this initiative sets the stage for the successful implementation of the elevated corridor, promising improved connectivity and convenience for the people of Gurugram.
