Tender floated for Prague Metro Trains and Automated Train Operation (ATO)

Prague, Czech (Metro Rail Today): The PRAGUE Public Transit (DPP) has taken a significant step forward in enhancing its metro network by launching a tender to prequalify companies for a comprehensive turnkey contract valued at approximately Koruna 86 billion (US$ 3.66 billion). The contract aims to modernize and automate Prague metro lines C and D, marking a significant milestone in the city's urban transportation infrastructure.

Under the proposed contract, the selected contractor will undertake the following key tasks:

  • Supply of Rolling Stock: The contractor will be responsible for supplying 69 five-car metro trains equipped with modern features. Additionally, the contract will include maintenance services for 35 years, ensuring the seamless operation of the metro fleet.

  • Automation of Lines C and D: The implementation of Automatic Train Operation (ATO) using a Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system will be integral to achieving a Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) on both lines C and D. This advanced automation technology will optimize train operations, enhance safety, and improve overall efficiency.

  • Installation of Platform Screen Doors: As part of the contract, the contractor will install platform screen doors at metro stations along lines C and D. These doors will contribute to passenger safety and comfort while minimizing the risk of accidents.

  • Depot Modernization: The contract will also encompass the modernization of two metro depots, ensuring that they meet the operational requirements of the upgraded metro network.

During the consultation phase with potential bidders, DPP will finalize the exact number of trains required for each line. For Line C, DPP aims to operate trains with headways of at least 90 seconds, thereby increasing capacity by 20%. Meanwhile, Line D, currently under construction, will initially procure 10 trains, with the possibility of increasing to 16 sets based on consultation outcomes.

The delivery schedule prioritizes trains for Line D, followed by those earmarked for Line C. All trains will be equipped with motored axles capable of traversing 4% gradients, ensuring smooth operation across the metro network.

With these ambitious plans, Prague aims to revolutionize its metro system, enhancing connectivity, efficiency, and passenger experience. The modernization and automation of lines C and D represent a significant investment in the city's transportation infrastructure, reaffirming Prague's commitment to sustainable urban development and innovative mobility solutions.
