Chandigarh, India (Metro Rail Today): In a bid to address the pressing issues surrounding the proposed Chandigarh Metro project, the Chandigarh Administration has formed a special committee composed of senior officials from the Union Territory (UT) and the state governments of Punjab and Haryana. The formation of this committee has been approved by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria. Its primary mandate is to evaluate the financial viability and feasibility of the Metro project, resolve coordination issues related to infrastructure development around the Chandigarh International Airport, and expedite the creation of a ring road around the UT region.
The newly constituted committee will focus on multiple aspects of the Metro project, with a particular emphasis on its financial viability. The panel will also delve into the feasibility of alternate modes of transport that could potentially alleviate traffic congestion in Chandigarh. The committee’s key objectives include:
The committee has been given a two-month timeline to submit its findings and recommendations.
Two critical infrastructure projects— the development of a shorter route to Chandigarh Airport and a ring road around Chandigarh — are at the heart of the committee’s mandate. Both these initiatives are designed to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity to and from the city.
Shorter Route to Chandigarh Airport: Currently, the access to Chandigarh International Airport faces congestion due to heavy traffic. The proposed shorter route is aimed at streamlining access to the airport, thereby reducing the travel time and improving commuter experience. However, the successful implementation of this project requires close coordination with various stakeholders, including the Punjab Government, the Air Force, and the Airport Authority of India (AAI).
Ring Road Project: Another key focus area for the committee is the development of a ring road around the city, which will help divert outer state traffic around Chandigarh. This will prevent non-local vehicles from entering the city, thereby reducing traffic congestion on the city’s arterial roads. The project, which will be executed by the NHAI, is expected to offer significant relief to Chandigarh’s congested road network.
Although some progress has been made in terms of land acquisition for the ring road, several inter-related issues between the governments of Punjab, Haryana, and NHAI remain unresolved. The committee is tasked with addressing these challenges to ensure the timely completion of both projects.
The committee, led by senior administrators from the UT and state governments, is expected to provide comprehensive recommendations based on a thorough study of the Metro project’s feasibility. The committee members include the following officials:
The committee will also examine inputs from the Urban Mobility Transport Authority (UMTA) meetings and engage with various stakeholders to resolve any challenges that may arise during the coordination process.
The Chandigarh Metro project, which aims to decongest the city's roadways and provide a sustainable, efficient mode of public transport, is a significant undertaking. However, its financial feasibility and the resolution of coordination issues are key to its successful implementation. The committee's role in resolving these matters will be crucial to ensure the Metro project does not face undue delays.
The ring road and shorter airport route projects are equally important for improving the overall traffic management system in Chandigarh. With the city grappling with increasing traffic, these infrastructure developments are expected to provide long-term benefits by reducing congestion and improving inter-state connectivity.
The committee has been given a two-month period to submit its findings, during which it will study various aspects of the Metro project’s financial viability and resolve coordination issues related to the airport and ring road projects. The timely submission of the report will enable the Chandigarh Administration and the Punjab and Haryana governments to make informed decisions regarding the future of these critical infrastructure projects.
With traffic congestion continuing to be a major challenge for Chandigarh, the successful resolution of these issues and the implementation of the Metro, ring road, and shorter airport route projects will play a crucial role in the city’s growth and development.
The formation of the special committee marks a pivotal step toward addressing the complex issues related to the Chandigarh Metro project and related infrastructure developments. With expert officials from Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana working in tandem, the committee aims to resolve financial and inter-governmental challenges that have impeded progress so far. The coming months will be crucial in determining the future of these projects, which have the potential to transform the city’s transport landscape and provide lasting relief to its residents.
