CIDCO to finalise DPR of Navi Mumbai Metro Lines 2, 3 and 4 by March 2024

Navi Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The successful inauguration of Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro, connecting Belapur terminus and Pendhar, has set the stage for an ambitious expansion of the metro network. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), spurred by the positive response from commuters, is now channeling its efforts into expediting the commissioning of Lines 2, 3, and 4.

Significance of Lines 2, 3, and 4

Lines 2, 3, and 4 are poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity to the Navi Mumbai International Airport terminal, offering a faster and more efficient mode of transportation. These elevated metro lines, extensions of Line 1, will traverse through Pendhar, MIDC Taloja, and parts of Khandeshwar, significantly improving the transportation system to the upcoming airport.

Upcoming Detailed Project Reports

Consultants engaged in the development process for the past five months are nearing the completion of the detailed project reports (DPR) for Lines 2, 3, and 4. The CIDCO official announced, "The DPRs for these lines are expected to be finalized within the next two months." This marks a critical step in the comprehensive planning and execution of the metro expansion project.

Positive Impacts and Commuter Engagement

The operational success of Line 1, which commenced operations in November, has resonated positively with commuters. Over a lakh commuters have utilized Line 1, contributing to a daily revenue report of nearly Rs 39 lakh from ticket sales conducted through both online and cash transactions.

Joint Managing Director Rajesh Patil emphasized the significance of this momentum, stating, "The feedback for Line 1 of the Metro is exceedingly positive, with an average of over 15,000 daily commuters using the line for travel between Belapur and Taloja. This momentum is crucial in hastening the commissioning of the other lines."

Fresh DPR for Line 1 Implementation

The initiation of Line 1 has necessitated a fresh detailed project report (DPR) due to the considerable time taken for its implementation. The earlier DPR, prepared in 2011, required updating to assess the current status of the area, including bridge alignment, encroachments, and the presence of a Coastal Regulation Zone.

Future Endeavors: Extending Metro Services

In addition to the focus on Lines 2, 3, and 4, CIDCO is actively exploring the feasibility of extending the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Metro Rail Line, known as Lines 8, between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Airport. A new DPR is currently underway to identify the most suitable corridor for extending services from Mankhurd to the Airport.

Conclusion

As the Navi Mumbai Metro continues its expansion journey, the imminent completion of the detailed project reports for Lines 2, 3, and 4 heralds a new era in the region's transportation landscape. With a focus on efficiency, connectivity, and positive commuter experiences, CIDCO's strategic approach positions the metro as a cornerstone for future urban development. The momentum generated by Line 1's success paves the way for a seamless integration of these upcoming metro lines into the daily lives of Navi Mumbai residents.
