From Paper to Platform: How Mumbai Metro’s Digital Ticketing Is Redefining Urban Mobility?
Nagpur, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant boost to Maharashtra’s expanding urban mobility ecosystem, Colossus Infra Projects Pvt. Ltd. has been awarded a key operations contract for the Nagpur Metro Rail Project. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) has issued the Letter of Acceptance to the company on July 31, 2025, following a competitive tendering process.
The contract, valued at approximately ₹21.2 crore, will remain in force for a period of two years, or 730 days, and covers critical responsibilities related to train operations and station control across the currently operational sections of the Nagpur Metro network. Officials said the scope of work is vital to ensuring safe, reliable and efficient day-to-day metro services as ridership continues to grow.
The tender attracted interest from two firms. Technical bids were opened on May 26, after which a detailed evaluation was carried out by Maha Metro. JMD Consultants was eliminated at the technical evaluation stage, and Colossus Infra Projects Pvt. Ltd. subsequently emerged as the lowest financial bidder. The financial bid was finalised on July 16, paving the way for the award of the contract.
Nagpur Metro’s Phase I, which is fully operational, comprises two corridors covering a combined length of 38.215 kilometres. The Orange Line runs along the north–south axis from Automotive Square to Khapri, while the Aqua Line connects Lokmanya Nagar to Prajapati Nagar along the east–west corridor. Developed at an investment exceeding ₹8,650 crore, Phase I has transformed urban mobility in Nagpur by offering faster, safer and environmentally sustainable public transport.
Industry experts view the award of the operations contract as a critical step in sustaining service quality as the system matures. Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Urban Infra Group, said that strong operational frameworks are as important as infrastructure creation. “Metro systems succeed when operational excellence matches capital investment. Appointing experienced operators at this stage will help Nagpur Metro maintain reliability, safety and passenger confidence as the network expands further,” she said.
Looking ahead, Maha Metro is progressing with Phase II of the Nagpur Metro Rail Project, which is currently under construction. Phase II will add 43.8 kilometres to the network through four major extensions, significantly expanding metro coverage into suburban, industrial and emerging residential areas. Once completed, these extensions are expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity, reduce dependence on private vehicles and support balanced urban growth.
With Phase II on the horizon and ridership steadily rising, Maha Metro officials believe that partnerships with capable operations and maintenance agencies will play a decisive role in ensuring seamless service delivery. As Nagpur continues to evolve as a smart and sustainable city, the metro system remains central to its long-term transport and development strategy.
