New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta today inaugurated the new Delhi Metro Museum at the Supreme Court Metro Station, marking an important milestone in showcasing the evolution, engineering excellence, and global standing of the Delhi Metro. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Transport, and Information Technology, Government of Delhi, along with Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), and other senior officials.
Following its formal inauguration, the museum will be open to the public from 19 December 2025 (Friday). The museum will operate from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, remaining open from Tuesday to Sunday, while Mondays and public holidays will be observed as closed days. To encourage wider public participation, an entry fee of just ₹10 per person has been fixed.
While appreciating the initiative, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the broader significance of the museum. She remarked, “Museums do not merely showcase history—they reflect the decisions that were made, the vision behind those decisions, and the path shown to future generations. The creation of this museum will serve as a powerful example of expert engineering by Delhi Metro for our children.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh congratulated DMRC and said, “Delhi has now truly become a city of museums. Institutions such as the National Museum and the Prime Ministers’ Museum showcase our nation’s glorious heritage. In that series, the Delhi Metro Museum will now secure its place among the capital’s major tourist attractions.”
Spread across approximately 12,000 square feet in its first phase, the Delhi Metro Museum has been conceptualised and designed in line with the finest metro museums across the world. The museum is strategically located at the Supreme Court Metro Station on the Blue Line, offering seamless access through public transport and road connectivity. Its proximity to major landmarks such as Bharat Mandapam and the Supreme Court further enhances visitor accessibility.
The museum features advanced interactive exhibits aimed at making learning immersive and engaging. These include metro train driving simulators, working models of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and Launching Girders, digital gaming interfaces explaining metro construction, quiz show screens, selfie points, and souvenir shops. Static models and detailed panels explain the day-to-day functioning of metro systems.
A special section of the museum is dedicated to ‘Metroman’ Dr. E. Sreedharan, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping modern urban rail systems in India. Visitors can also explore a mock metro tunnel, a model of the Operations Control Centre (OCC), dioramas depicting Delhi’s iconic landmarks, and a photo gallery showcasing visits by national and international dignitaries.
In total, the museum houses over 50 panels, exhibits, kiosks, and models, offering a comprehensive narrative of Delhi Metro’s planning, construction, operations, and expansion. Phase 2 of the museum is already being planned and is expected to introduce new displays and technological innovations in the near future.
The concept of a Delhi Metro Museum dates back to 2008, when DMRC envisioned documenting the journey of India’s most advanced urban transit system. On 31 December 2008, India’s first-ever Metro Rail Museum was inaugurated at Patel Chowk Metro Station, becoming the only such museum in the South Asian region at that time.
The Patel Chowk museum attracted nearly 5,000 students annually from schools and colleges across India and abroad. With the opening of the new museum at Supreme Court Metro Station, the Patel Chowk Metro Museum has now been closed, ushering in a new chapter with a larger, more interactive, and globally benchmarked facility.
Commenting on the initiative, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The Delhi Metro Museum is more than a public attraction—it is a knowledge hub that captures India’s journey in urban transport innovation. Such institutions inspire young minds, promote engineering excellence, and reinforce the importance of sustainable mass transit in shaping future-ready cities.”
The inauguration of the new Delhi Metro Museum reinforces Delhi Metro’s legacy as a global benchmark in urban rail development. With its immersive exhibits, strategic location, and affordable access, the museum is poised to become a major educational and tourism destination, celebrating the past, present, and future of metro rail in India.
