New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major development for India’s metro rail ecosystem, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and BEML Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly collaborate on metro rail projects in India and international markets. The partnership aims to leverage the combined strengths of both organisations to identify, bid for and execute metro projects with enhanced efficiency and competitiveness.
The MoU was formally signed on 8th April 2026 at Metro Bhawan, New Delhi, by Dr. P.K. Garg, Director (Business Development), DMRC and Mr. Rajeev Kumar Gupta, Director (Rail & Metro), BEML Ltd., in the presence of Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, DMRC and Shri Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director of BEML, along with senior officials from both organisations.
Synergising Capabilities for End-to-End Solutions
This strategic collaboration brings together DMRC’s globally recognised expertise in metro project execution, operations and maintenance with BEML’s strong manufacturing capabilities in rolling stock. The partnership is expected to deliver integrated, end-to-end solutions covering design, supply, execution and lifecycle support for metro systems.
Highlighting the significance of the agreement, DMRC Managing Director Dr. Vikas Kumar termed the MoU a “historic collaboration” between two leading Indian entities. He emphasised its potential to strengthen urban mobility infrastructure while also underlining the importance of developing indigenous technologies such as propulsion systems and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
BEML CMD Shri Shantanu Roy also noted that the collaboration would further reinforce BEML’s footprint in the rail and metro sector, pointing to the company’s long-standing association with DMRC in supplying metro coaches since its inception. He expressed confidence that the combined expertise would enable both organisations to deliver globally benchmarked solutions.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The collaboration between DMRC and BEML represents a strategic alignment of India’s core strengths in metro system execution and rolling stock manufacturing. Such partnerships are essential to build globally competitive capabilities and to position India as a key player in the international urban mobility market. It also reinforces the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting indigenous innovation and integrated project delivery.”
Boost to India’s Global Metro Rail Presence
The MoU reflects a broader trend of Indian public sector and engineering companies joining forces to expand their presence beyond domestic markets. By combining technical expertise with manufacturing excellence, the partnership aims to enhance India’s ability to compete in global metro rail tenders.
The collaboration is also expected to accelerate the development of indigenous technologies, particularly in critical areas such as propulsion systems and tunnelling equipment. This aligns with India’s broader push toward self-reliance in infrastructure and manufacturing.
As metro networks continue to expand across Indian cities and demand grows in emerging international markets, the DMRC-BEML partnership is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of sustainable, efficient and globally competitive urban transit solutions.
