Ahmedabad: A joint venture (JV) between Ranjit Buildcon Limited and SAM (India) Builtwell Pvt Ltd has secured a contract worth ₹859.25 crore for civil construction works under the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project’s Phase 2A. The contract covers an elevated viaduct, four elevated stations, an underground tunnel section and one underground station on the corridor connecting Ashram Road with Ahmedabad Airport.
Ranjit Buildcon–SAM India JV quoted ₹859.25 crore (2.28% lower than GMRC's estimated cost of ₹879.27 crore).
However, the forth bidder Eagle Infra India Limited was disqualified.
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Limited invited bids for the package in August 2026. The work is expected to be completed within 36 months, according to the project details provided.
The contract includes construction of a 4.97-kilometre elevated viaduct extending from the Koteshwar Road dead end to the beginning of the underground section’s ramp. The elevated portion will include four stations: Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River and Sardar Nagar.
The package also covers the design, construction and completion of a 1.01-kilometre underground section comprising twin cut-and-cover tunnels between the ramp and the dead end. Associated works include the ramp and one underground metro station at Airport.
Together, the elevated and underground sections account for approximately 6.03 kilometres of the corridor. The combination of elevated infrastructure and underground construction is intended to extend metro connectivity towards Ahmedabad Airport while integrating the line with the surrounding urban transport network.
The Ashram Road–Airport corridor is planned to have five stations in total, comprising four elevated stations and one underground station. The project is estimated to involve an investment of ₹2,169 crore, according to the supplied project information.
The extension is expected to improve access to important city destinations and strengthen public transport connectivity towards the airport. By providing a metro-based alternative to road travel, the corridor could help improve commuter convenience and support more integrated urban mobility.
The project also presents engineering and construction challenges associated with delivering elevated viaducts and underground infrastructure within a single package. Coordination between civil works, station construction and future metro systems will be important to ensure timely completion and readiness for operations.
The ₹859.25-crore contract marks a significant construction package within Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A. The JV’s performance over the planned 36-month execution period will be important for completing the viaduct, stations, tunnel and ramp works in line with GMRC’s project requirements.
Once completed and commissioned, the corridor is expected to strengthen the Ahmedabad Metro network and improve connectivity between the city and the airport area.
