Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for Chennai Metro Phase 2, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (DMRC) has emerged as the lowest bidder, securing the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) contract for ₹5,870 crores. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) initiated the bidding process in August 2024, attracting proposals from two major firms: DMRC and Deutsche Bahn International Operations GmbH (DB IO).
The technical bid evaluation took place on March 7, 2025, followed by the assessment of qualified bids on March 10, 2025. The financial bid was opened on March 11, 2025, where DMRC's bid of ₹5,870 crores was deemed the lowest, outperforming DB IO’s bid of ₹7,654.6 crores. This is DMRC's second win for similar contract after Mumbai Metro Line 3.
The awarded contract spans 12 years (4,380 days) and covers the operation and maintenance of Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2, including:
Corridor 3: Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri SIPCOT-II
Corridor 4: Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass
Corridor 5: Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur
Maintenance Depots: Madhavaram, Poonamallee, and Semmancheri
The contract period begins with the commissioning of the final section of Phase 2, with an option for a three-year extension based on performance evaluation.
Approved by the Central Government’s Cabinet in October 2024, Chennai Metro Phase 2 aims to enhance urban mobility with three new corridors:
Corridor 3: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.4 km, 49 stations)
Corridor 4: Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass (26.1 km, 28 stations)
Corridor 5: Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (44.6 km, 48 stations)
This massive infrastructure project will significantly improve public transportation in Chennai, providing efficient and sustainable transit solutions for residents and commuters.
