Muscat, Oman (Metro Rail Today): In a recent interview with Radio Muscat FM, H E Said bin Hamood al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, unveiled Oman's ambitious vision for the advancement of its transportation sector. Emphasizing the need for decisive action in the coming decade, the Minister outlined key initiatives aimed at transforming Oman's transportation landscape, including the implementation of an integrated public transport system in Muscat and the introduction of flights to Jabal Akhdar.
One of the most anticipated projects, the Muscat Metro, has reached a significant milestone with the completion of its feasibility study. H E Mawali announced that the study's findings are set to be presented to the Council of Ministers in the near future, marking a crucial step forward in the realization of this transformative urban transit project.
Addressing the pressing issue of traffic congestion in Muscat, H E Mawali highlighted the proactive measures being taken by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) to alleviate congestion through extensive road projects and expansions led by Muscat Municipality. With projections indicating a potential decline in average travel speeds without intervention, the Minister underscored the urgency of investing in sustainable mass transit solutions to ensure the city's long-term mobility and accessibility.
Recognizing the pivotal role of public transportation in fostering sustainable development, H E Mawali reiterated the government's commitment to enhancing tourism accessibility. Plans to introduce flights to Jabal Akhdar and increase the frequency of flights to Masirah Island reflect Oman's efforts to improve connectivity and promote tourism across the country. Moreover, the proposed establishment of Khasab Airport aims to further enhance regional connectivity, with plans for its design tender already in motion.
The chosen location for Khasab Airport in the Hattut area demonstrates strategic planning to optimize airspace utilization and mitigate weather-related disruptions, ensuring operational efficiency and safety. With a projected timeline of 48 months for its completion, the airport is poised to play a vital role in facilitating regional travel and economic growth.
As Oman charts a course towards a more sustainable and efficient transportation system, the unveiling of these ambitious plans underscores the government's commitment to driving economic development, enhancing tourism, and improving the overall quality of life for its citizens.
