Lucknow, India (Metro Rail Today): Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) has invited bids for a major civil construction contract under Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project, marking a fresh push to expand the city’s rapid transit network. The tender pertains to the design and construction of an elevated viaduct and stations along a key section of the corridor, which is expected to strengthen metro connectivity in the old city and western parts of Lucknow.
According to tender documents issued by UPMRCL, bids opened on January 1, 2026, and will close on February 2, 2026. The contract, estimated at approximately ₹492.22 crore, carries a completion period of 30 months. A pre-bid meeting has been scheduled for January 12, 2026, while the earnest money deposit for the tender has been fixed at ₹9.84 crore.
The scope of work covers the design and construction of an elevated mainline viaduct from Thakurganj Metro Station to Vasant Kunj Metro Station, spanning about 4.6 kilometres including station lengths. The contract also includes the construction of a ramp of nearly 740 metres to connect the viaduct with depot entry and exit facilities. In addition, five elevated metro stations—Thakurganj, Balaganj, Sarfarajganj, Musabagh and Vasant Kunj—will be built under this package.
UPMRCL has specified that the contract will encompass comprehensive civil works along with associated ancillary structures, pre-engineered building structures, architectural finishes, water supply and sanitary installations, drainage, external development, firefighting systems and related electrical and mechanical works. Officials said the integrated scope is aimed at ensuring faster execution and coordinated delivery of civil and allied systems.
The Lucknow Metro currently has Phase-1A fully operational, connecting CCS Airport to Munshi Pulia over a total length of 22.878 kilometres, comprising both elevated and underground sections. Phase-1B, which runs between Lucknow Railway Station and Vasant Kunj with a total planned length of about 11.1 kilometres, is under implementation and is expected to significantly enhance east-west connectivity while linking important residential and commercial areas.
Industry observers say the latest tender signals renewed momentum in Lucknow Metro’s expansion programme. Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, Managing Director and CEO of Urban Infra Group, said timely awarding of civil contracts is crucial for maintaining project schedules. “Issuing large integrated civil packages at this stage reflects UPMRCL’s intent to streamline execution. For cities like Lucknow, metro expansion is not just about capacity addition but about improving accessibility in dense urban areas where road-based solutions have limited scope,” she said.
Once completed, Phase-1B is expected to improve interchange opportunities with the existing operational corridor and encourage a modal shift from private vehicles to public transport. UPMRCL officials believe that steady progress across phases will help the Lucknow Metro emerge as a central pillar of the city’s long-term urban mobility strategy.
