Godrej & Boyce Wins Station Finishing Work Contract for Mumbai Metro Line 4

Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for Mumbai's metro infrastructure, Godrej & Boyce emerged as the lowest bidder for the architectural finishing and pre-engineered building (PEB) roof contract CA-222. This contract encompasses seven stations along the 32.32 km Mumbai Metro Line 4 project, which is set to connect Wadala to Kasarvadavali through a network of 32 stations.

The seven elevated stations, situated at the southern end of Mumbai Metro's Green Line, include Garodia Nagar, Pant Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Shreyas Cinema, Godrej Company, Vikhroli Metro, and Surya Nagar. The civil construction for these stations falls under the 6.406 km civil package CA-09, awarded to Tata Projects – CHEC JV back in March 2018 with a 30-month deadline.

After inviting bids for the architectural finishing contract in October 2023, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) received competitive bids from three firms. Godrej and Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. secured the winning bid at ₹251.02 crore, surpassing the estimated cost of ₹200.83 crore by 24.99%. Here are the financial positions of each bidder:-

  • Godrej and Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd.: ₹251.02 crore
  • Eagle Infra India Ltd.: ₹257.62 crore
  • Landmark Corporation Pvt Ltd.: ₹261.80 crore

The scope of work under contract package CA-222 includes architectural finishing and plumbing works including interior fitouts, façade etc. along with Part Design, Fabrication, Supply and Erection of Pre-Engineered Structure including Entry-Exit Structures for 07 elevated stations viz Garodia Nagar, Pant Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Shreyas Cinema, Godrej Company, Vikhroli Metro & Surya Nagar of Line-4 corridor [Wadala-Ghatkopar-Mulund-Thane-Kasarvadavali] of Mumbai Metro Rail Project of MMRDA.

With the bid exceeding the estimate, the MMRDA faces a decision-making juncture. The substantial difference in the bid amount may lead to negotiations between the concerned parties. However, if an agreement isn't reached, the tendering process might face cancellation in the upcoming months.

This scenario isn't isolated, as MMRDA confronts a similar challenge in Package CA-194, where Eagle Infra's bid is 23.94% higher than MMRDA's estimate. This package pertains to the architectural finishing for seven stations between Mulund Fire Station and Majiwada.

GPM Architects & Planners, appointed by MMRDA and Systra MVA Consulting as Line 4’s Detailed Design Consultant, have been entrusted with designing 12 stations. While the current design status remains uncertain, renderings from their website showcase the potential aesthetic direction for the metro stations.

In a broader context, Mumbai's metro projects are progressing, albeit with challenges. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority recently re-invited bids for its rolling stock contract. Within the tender documents, there's an expectation for the independent safety assessor (ISA) and Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) to certify the line’s Phase 1 fit for revenue operations by August 2026.

Godrej & Boyce's successful bid for Mumbai Metro Line 4 stations' finishing and PEB contract marks a pivotal moment in the city's metro infrastructure development. As negotiations unfold and challenges are navigated, the trajectory of Mumbai's metro expansion remains a dynamic journey.
