Gurugram, India (Metro Rail Today): Gurgaon is set to take a major step towards improving its public transport infrastructure with the upcoming construction of a new metro corridor. Expected to begin in June 2025, the new metro line will link the Millennium City Centre to Cyber City, passing through Old Gurgaon. The project is part of the city's long-term vision to tackle growing traffic congestion and enhance connectivity within the region.
According to Ajay Kumar, the Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon, the final stages of appointing a general consultant for the project are underway, and tenders will be issued shortly after. Coordination among various departments is being carefully managed to address any potential challenges related to the metro's route alignment. The construction phase is anticipated to begin in June, with a completion timeline of four years, as per earlier statements by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
The ambitious project will consist of a 28.8 km metro corridor, featuring 27 elevated stations, and will be constructed with a total budget of ₹5,452 crore. Of this, ₹869 crore will be funded by the central government, while the remaining ₹4,556 crore will be provided by the Haryana state government.
An official from Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) confirmed that geotechnical investigations for the first 13 km segment of the corridor have been completed, and civil, architectural, and electrical works have already begun. The tender for constructing the depot and the first segment of the metro line is expected to be finalized within a week, with additional bids for the remaining sections of the corridor set to be invited in the next two weeks.
Alongside the metro project, authorities are also progressing with work on the Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) corridor. The alignment for the RRTS along National Highway-8 (NH-8) has been finalized, though it still awaits approval from the Union Cabinet. The land required for building junctions and stations along this route has been identified, and authorities are working with various agencies to facilitate land transfers.
The revised route for the Delhi-Gurgaon-SNB Rapid Rail Corridor, which now runs along NH-8, was approved in August 2023. The 22-station route will pass through key locations such as Cyber City, IFFCO Chowk, and Signature Towers, providing a vital connection for commuters between different transportation networks. Transit hubs like Cyber City, Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Kherki Daula, and Pachgaon are being developed to allow passengers to seamlessly switch between the RRTS, metro, buses, and other local transit services, offering enhanced travel options across the National Capital Region (NCR).
Additionally, to improve road connectivity and ease traffic congestion, several infrastructure projects are also in progress. Elevated roads at the Manesar Bus Terminal and a flyover at Bilaspur Chowk on NH-8 are among the upcoming developments, while plans to widen Jail Road from Sohna Expressway are in motion, pending necessary approvals from the forest department.
With these comprehensive infrastructure upgrades, Gurgaon is positioning itself as a more connected and efficient urban hub, aimed at improving daily commutes and providing better transit options for residents and visitors alike. Stay tuned for more updates as the city moves forward with these transformative projects.
