Kolkata, India (Metro Rail Today): Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a major modernization programme for Kolkata Metro, confirming that 60 new-generation metro trains will be introduced over the next five years to enhance passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and overall commuter experience across the city's expanding urban transit network.
The announcement comes amid a broader push by the Ministry of Railways to accelerate metro expansion, high-speed rail development, and railway infrastructure investments in West Bengal.
Speaking on the occasion, Vaishnaw highlighted the rapid pace of metro development witnessed in Kolkata over the past decade. He noted that approximately 45 km of new metro corridors have been added since 2014, compared to 28 km developed during the previous 42 years, reflecting a significant acceleration in urban transit infrastructure creation.
The induction of 60 modern metro trainsets is expected to support the growing metro network, improve service frequency, enhance reliability, and provide passengers with upgraded travel amenities. The new rolling stock will form a key component of Kolkata Metro’s ongoing modernization strategy as multiple new corridors become operational in the coming years.
Commenting on the developments, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said:
“The introduction of 60 new metro trains and the proposed Delhi–Siliguri high-speed rail corridor reflect the scale of India’s railway transformation. Modern rolling stock, expanded metro infrastructure, and high-speed connectivity will not only improve passenger mobility but also stimulate regional economic growth, investment, and sustainable urban development. Enhanced Centre-State collaboration will be critical in ensuring the timely delivery of these transformative projects.”
With major investments planned in rolling stock, metro expansion, and next-generation rail infrastructure, West Bengal is poised to play a significant role in India's evolving transportation ecosystem.
