Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited bids for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of track works at the Kasheli Depot for Mumbai Metro Line 5. The contract, estimated at approximately ₹84.35 crore, marks another important step in the development of the Orange Line, which will connect Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan.
According to the tender notice, the selected contractor will be responsible for delivering complete standard-gauge track infrastructure within the depot, including both ballasted and ballastless track systems required for operations and maintenance activities.
The tender has been issued under Tender No. MMRDA/MPIU/ML5/CA-303. Interested bidders must submit their proposals by 30 June 2026, while a pre-bid meeting is scheduled for 10 June 2026. The project carries a completion period of 20 months and requires an earnest money deposit (EMD) of ₹42.17 lakh.
Kasheli Depot will serve as the primary operations and maintenance facility for Mumbai Metro Line 5, housing rolling stock, maintenance infrastructure and operational support systems necessary for the corridor's day-to-day functioning. The depot is a critical component of the metro line's overall infrastructure, ensuring efficient train servicing, inspection and storage.
Mumbai Metro Line 5 is one of MMRDA’s key urban transit projects aimed at improving connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Once operational, the corridor will provide a reliable, high-capacity public transport alternative for commuters travelling between Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan—three rapidly growing urban and industrial centres that currently experience significant road congestion.
The Orange Line is expected to play a vital role in reducing travel times, easing traffic pressure on major road corridors and supporting sustainable urban mobility across the region. As construction progresses across various project packages, the award of depot track works will help advance preparations for future system integration and operational readiness.
Commenting on the continued expansion of metro infrastructure across India, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said:
"Metro depots are the backbone of any urban rail system, ensuring reliability, safety and operational efficiency. The progress of Mumbai Metro Line 5 reflects the region's commitment to strengthening sustainable public transport infrastructure. As cities continue to expand, investments in integrated metro networks will be essential for enhancing mobility, reducing congestion and supporting long-term economic growth."
With multiple metro corridors currently under development across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, MMRDA continues to accelerate investments in rail-based transit solutions aimed at transforming urban mobility and supporting the region's future growth.
