Hyderabad, India (Metro Rail Today): The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is making significant progress in its expansion plans, with detailed project reports (DPRs) for three key routes—Medchal, Shamirpet, and the Shamshabad Airport-Future City corridor—set to be submitted to the government by the end of March. HMRL Managing Director NVS Reddy confirmed that critical surveys and soil testing for these corridors are expected to be completed by the end of February.
The expansion includes the development of the JBS-Medchal (24 km) and JBS-Shamirpet (21 km) Metro corridors. Survey and investigative work for these projects are advancing rapidly, with DPR preparation relying on three major studies:
Traffic Surveys: Analysis of current daily commuter volumes, future travel projections, vehicular movement, pedestrian footfall, travel time, and projected Metro ridership.
Soil Testing (Geotechnical Investigation): Examination of soil and subsoil conditions, load-bearing capacity, groundwater levels, and seismic risk analysis to ensure structural stability.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA): Study of air quality, noise pollution, water resources, biodiversity, and socio-economic impacts on local livelihoods.
Officials confirmed that soil testing is underway at 25 locations along the JBS-Medchal route and 19 locations along the JBS-Shamirpet corridor. To date, 14 tests have been completed in Medchal and 11 in Shamirpet, with all tests scheduled for completion by the end of the month.
HMRL is leveraging existing soil data from studies conducted by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The additional soil tests will support the design of Metro pillars, stations, and other infrastructure to ensure long-term durability and safety.
The Hyderabad Metro expansion is expected to significantly improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and support economic growth. With DPR submissions imminent and essential groundwork nearing completion, Hyderabad is moving closer to realizing its vision of a world-class Metro network.
Stay tuned for further updates on the Hyderabad Metro’s expansion and its impact on urban transportation in the region.
