Tamil Nadu seeks permission to conduct feasibility studies for two new Bullet Train Corridors

Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a renewed push for high-speed rail expansion in southern India, the Tamil Nadu Government has formally approached the Railway Board seeking permission to conduct feasibility studies for two proposed bullet train corridors connecting Chennai with key cities in Kerala. The proposed routes include Chennai–Thiruvananthapuram via Tiruchirappalli and Nagercoil, and Chennai–Ernakulam via Salem and Coimbatore.

The move aligns with the Central Government’s broader vision to develop a network of high-speed rail corridors across India, modelled on the under-construction Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project. While recent Union Budget announcements focused on corridors such as Chennai–Hyderabad and Chennai–Mysuru, Tamil Nadu’s proposal aims to extend the high-speed network further south to improve inter-state connectivity and economic integration.

Reviving a Long-Pending Vision

The idea of a high-speed rail link between Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram is not new. It was originally proposed in the Railway Budget of 2010 as part of Indian Railways’ ambitious “Vision 2020” plan, which identified six potential bullet train corridors across the country. However, subsequent policy focus shifted towards prioritising the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor as India’s first high-speed rail project, leaving southern routes largely on the drawing board.

With Kerala initially absent from the latest list of proposed corridors, Tamil Nadu’s intervention is being seen as a strategic effort to bring the southern region back into the high-speed rail roadmap.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “Expanding high-speed rail connectivity to southern India is a logical next step in building a balanced national transport network. Corridors connecting Chennai with Kerala’s major cities have strong potential to boost regional economies, tourism and seamless mobility across states.”

Strategic Connectivity and Economic Impact

If approved, the proposed corridors could significantly reduce travel time between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, offering a fast, reliable alternative to road and conventional rail transport. The Chennai–Ernakulam route via Salem and Coimbatore would serve key industrial and commercial hubs, while the Chennai–Thiruvananthapuram corridor would strengthen connectivity to southern districts and major tourism destinations.

In parallel, Tamil Nadu has also requested the extension of the East Coast Dedicated Freight Corridor from Vijayawada to Chennai, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. This proposal aims to enhance freight movement efficiency and support industrial growth in the region, complementing passenger-focused high-speed rail initiatives.

A Step Toward a Southern High-Speed Network

The proposal comes at a time when India is gradually expanding its high-speed rail ambitions beyond the western corridor. Integrating southern states into this network could unlock new economic opportunities and improve connectivity between major urban centres.

As the Railway Board reviews Tamil Nadu’s request, the outcome will determine whether these long-envisioned corridors can finally move from concept to reality, potentially reshaping the transportation landscape of southern India.
