New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Tday): In a major step towards restoring Mumbai Monorail services, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) has awarded a ₹296.4 crore Operations & Maintenance (O&M) contract to Power Mech Projects Ltd. The Letter of Acceptance (LoA) was issued on April 8, 2026, marking a key milestone in reviving the long-suspended transit system.
The contract followed a multi-stage tendering process, reflecting strong competition from leading infrastructure players.
After evaluation, Power Mech Projects Ltd. emerged as the lowest (L1) bidder, securing the contract.
The contract covers complete operations and maintenance of the Mumbai Monorail corridor from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Chembur.
The awarded contract pertains to the 19.54 km Mumbai Monorail Line 1, comprising 17 stations and connecting key nodes across the eastern corridor of the city.
Key Highlights:
Major stations include:
Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk, Wadala Depot, Bhakti Park, Wadala Road, Chembur Naka, and Chembur.
Operations on the Mumbai Monorail were suspended on September 20, 2025, following repeated technical failures and mid-journey breakdowns. In response, the MMRDA initiated a comprehensive overhaul of the system.
Key upgrades include:
In February 2026, Bureau Veritas, acting as the Independent Safety Assessor, granted mandatory safety certification for both the upgraded signalling system and new trainsets.
As part of the revival roadmap:
Testing covers:
These trials are essential to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations before reopening for passengers.
The appointment of Power Mech Projects is expected to bring greater operational discipline and reliability to a system that has historically struggled with performance issues.
The revival of the monorail is crucial for:
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said:
“The revival of the Mumbai Monorail is a critical step in restoring commuter confidence in alternative urban transit systems. A transparent and competitive tendering process, culminating in the selection of Power Mech Projects, reflects a strong commitment to operational efficiency and accountability. As urban mobility challenges intensify, optimizing existing infrastructure will be key to building resilient and sustainable transport networks.”
With contract award, safety certification, and trial runs progressing, the Mumbai Monorail is moving steadily toward a long-awaited restart.
The project now hinges on efficient execution of O&M responsibilities, consistent performance, and delivering a reliable commuter experience—factors that will ultimately determine whether the monorail can reclaim its role in Mumbai’s evolving urban mobility landscape.
