BEML secures additional ₹180.60 crore Rolling Stock Order for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trainsets

New Delhi, India (Rail & Metro Today): BEML Limited has secured an additional order worth ₹180.60 crore from Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, for the manufacturing and supply of Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets, further strengthening the company’s role in India’s rapidly expanding modern railway manufacturing ecosystem.

The latest order builds on the contract awarded by ICF to BEML in May 2023 for the design, manufacture and commissioning of 10 rakes of 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets. The programme represents an important milestone in India’s efforts to develop advanced passenger rail solutions through domestic engineering, design and manufacturing capabilities.

Expanding Vande Bharat Sleeper Programme

BEML’s involvement in the Vande Bharat Sleeper programme marks a significant expansion of the Vande Bharat platform from premium daytime chair-car services to long-distance overnight travel. The sleeper trainsets are being developed with modifications required to accommodate sleeping berths while maintaining high standards of passenger comfort, safety and operational performance.

The project involves advanced engineering requirements, including stringent crashworthiness and fire-safety standards, alongside modern interiors and passenger amenities. BEML is focusing on developing aesthetically designed passenger spaces using advanced materials while ensuring durability, reliability and efficient operation.

The additional order from ICF underlines the continuing expansion of the Vande Bharat trainset programme and BEML’s growing manufacturing capabilities in advanced railway rolling stock.

Boost to India’s Modern Rail Network

The introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains is expected to expand the application of next-generation train technology to longer-distance routes. While existing Vande Bharat chair-car services have primarily transformed daytime inter-city travel, sleeper variants are designed to address the requirements of overnight journeys, offering passengers improved comfort along with modern onboard facilities.
