Mumbai, India (Rail & Metro Today): Thane's long-awaited metro connectivity to Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar is moving closer to reality after the Central Government approved the revised alignment on August 29, 2026. The approval paves the way for the expansion of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's metro network through the ongoing Metro Line 5 and the proposed Metro Line 5A.
The revised plan will create around 34 km of metro connectivity across the Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar region, significantly expanding the original 24.90-km Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan Metro Line 5 proposal.
The combined Mumbai Metro Line 5 and Line 5A project is estimated to cost approximately ₹18,130.55 crore. While the Thane–Bhiwandi section is nearing completion and is targeted to open around December 2026, the extended metro network towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar is currently targeted for completion during 2030–31.
The original Line 5 alignment encountered significant implementation challenges, particularly in Bhiwandi's dense and infrastructure-heavy urban environment.
Issues related to land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement, as well as conflicts between the proposed metro alignment and existing infrastructure, made construction increasingly difficult. A key challenge was the conflict with the existing Bhiwandi Bypass Flyover, which affected the feasibility of implementing the original alignment.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) subsequently redesigned the corridor to address these constraints. The revised alignment includes a short underground section in Bhiwandi, allowing the metro to bypass the existing flyover and other critical infrastructure.
The redesign is not merely a technical modification but an important step towards establishing a reliable mass-transit link for rapidly growing urban areas that remain heavily dependent on congested roads and existing suburban rail services.
Bhiwandi is one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's most important warehousing, logistics, commercial and industrial centres, generating substantial passenger and freight movement.
Meanwhile, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar have traditionally relied heavily on Central Railway services, buses, autorickshaws and road transport. Although suburban rail provides essential connectivity to Mumbai and other destinations, it does not serve every cross-city travel requirement within the wider metropolitan region.
The revised Metro Line 5 and proposed Line 5A are expected to create an important new transport corridor connecting Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, reducing dependence on congested roads and complementing the existing railway network.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The revised Mumbai Metro Line 5 and proposed Line 5A demonstrate the importance of flexible and innovative planning in delivering large urban infrastructure projects. The integration of an underground section to overcome implementation challenges can help unlock long-awaited connectivity for Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. This expanded network has the potential to transform regional mobility across one of the fastest-growing parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.”
The ongoing Mumbai Metro Line 5 includes stations at Kapurbawdi, Balkum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjur Phata, Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi, Temghar, Rajnouli, Govegaon, Kongaon West and Kongaon East.
The proposed Metro Line 5A and its spur will further extend the network through Durgadi, Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Path, Kalyan, Shanti Nagar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Chowk and Ulhasnagar.
The wider corridor will provide important interconnectivity with the ongoing Mumbai Metro Line 4, the proposed Metro Line 12 between Kalyan and Taloja, and the existing Central Railway suburban network.
The first operational section of the corridor between Thane and Bhiwandi is currently targeted to open around December 2026, subject to the completion of construction, systems works and the necessary testing and safety approvals.
The subsequent development towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar will extend metro connectivity deeper into the eastern and northeastern parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Once the complete network is operational, the Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar corridor is expected to serve major residential areas, commercial and industrial centres, government establishments and key transportation hubs.
With Central Government approval now secured for the revised alignment, the Mumbai Metro Line 5 and proposed Line 5A have moved beyond one of their major planning challenges, opening a new chapter in the effort to bring high-capacity, rail-based public transport to millions of residents across the extended Mumbai metropolitan region.
