Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major development for India's next-generation rail infrastructure, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai is set to roll out the country’s first 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper train by the end of 2026. This significant milestone marks the evolution of the iconic Vande Bharat Express platform beyond short-distance semi-high-speed travel into the realm of long-distance, overnight luxury journeys.
The upcoming sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train is being designed to operate at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, offering passengers faster, safer, and more comfortable long-distance travel. Unlike the existing 8- and 16-coach chair car configurations currently deployed on major intercity routes, the new 24-coach rake will cater to overnight journeys, featuring sleeper berths across multiple classes, including AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier.
According to senior railway officials, the prototype design work is nearing completion, and manufacturing is expected to begin soon at ICF. The introduction of the sleeper version will be a game-changer for Indian Railways, as it aims to replace premium long-haul trains like Rajdhani and Duronto Express with Vande Bharat’s advanced rolling stock and smart passenger amenities.
The train will feature state-of-the-art safety features, automatic doors, bio-vacuum toilets, GPS-based passenger information systems, and a modern suspension system for better ride quality. Energy efficiency, reduced noise, and aesthetic interiors will further enhance passenger comfort on long journeys. The coaches will also be equipped with enhanced fire safety systems and disability-friendly provisions, aligning with global standards of rail travel.
This sleeper train rollout aligns with Indian Railways' broader modernization agenda to introduce more Make in India high-speed trains across various categories. The current fleet of Vande Bharat Express trains, introduced in 2019, has rapidly expanded across the country, connecting metros and major Tier-II cities with semi-high-speed services.
The move to extend the brand into sleeper class trains reflects the growing public demand for faster alternatives to traditional express trains, especially on overnight routes exceeding 500–800 km. The sleeper version is expected to provide an airline-like experience on wheels, with modern lighting, infotainment, and upgraded catering services.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, stated, “The 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper is a bold and visionary step that redefines overnight train travel in India. This initiative not only elevates passenger experience but also shows how Indian Railways is committed to building a world-class transportation ecosystem, entirely designed and built in India.”
The first prototype is expected to undergo rigorous testing by mid-2026, with commercial operations planned soon after. The launch will mark a new era for long-distance rail travel in India, offering passengers a seamless blend of speed, comfort, and technology.
