Jammu, India (Metro Rail Today): India's metro network is rapidly expanding, poised to surpass the United States and become the world's second-largest in the coming years. At a program held in Srinagar on Saturday (April 20), Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shed light on the transformative journey of the country over the past decade under the Modi government.
Puri stated that within the next 5 years, India is poised to be among the top 3 economies globally. In terms of metro network operations, India is currently ranked third globally, behind China and the United States. China leads with an extensive network of 9,827.5 kilometers, encompassing 47 metro systems with 281 lines, followed by the United States with 1,386.2 kilometers spanning 16 metro systems and 87 lines. India's operational metro network spans approximately 911.48 kilometers, distributed across 17 metro systems and 38 lines. However, with the current pace of expansion, India is expected to surpass the United States soon. Within 2-3 years, India's operational metro network is projected to exceed 950 kilometers, solidifying its position as the second largest globally.
Top 5 Metro Rail Network with Rank
#1 China: 9,827.5 km (47 metro systems with 281 lines)
#2 USA: 1,386.2 km (16 metro systems, 87 lines)
#3 India: 911.48 km (17 metro systems, 38 lines)
#4 South Korea: 888.6 km (6 metro systems, 23 lines)
#5 Japan: 816.1 km (15 metro systems, 47 lines)
The Union Minister emphasized that without the development of Kashmir, India cannot progress. In the 1700s, India held a 25% share of the global GDP, which gradually declined to just 2% by 1947. A decade ago, in 2014, when India was discussed internationally, it was often considered among the top 5 economies globally. However, since the formation of the Narendra Modi-led government in 2014, India's economy is now among the top 5 in the world.
