Indore Metro Rail Network expands to 17 km as Priority Corridor 2 opened to public

Indore, India (Rail & Metro Today): Indore Metro has reached a major milestone with the inauguration of Priority Corridor-2 on September 5, 2026, expanding the city’s operational metro network from around 6 km to approximately 17 km. Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the expanded corridor at the Brilliant Convention Centre in Vijay Nagar.

Regular passenger services on the extended Gandhi Nagar–Malviya Nagar Square corridor commenced following the inauguration, marking a significant step in the development of rapid transit infrastructure in Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital.

Speaking on the occasion, Manohar Lal highlighted Indore’s importance to Madhya Pradesh and the country. “Madhya Pradesh is the heart of the country and Indore is the heartbeat of the heart. If the heart and heartbeat remain strong for the country, then the country will also remain strong,” he said in a post on X following the inauguration.

11-km Extension Adds 11 Stations

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the newly inaugurated Phase-I Reach-II, extending approximately 11 km from Super Corridor-3 to Malviya Nagar Chauraha, comprises 11 stations and has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹2,850 crore.

With the opening of the extension, the Indore Metro network now comprises 16 operational stations covering approximately 17 km. The cumulative project cost of the operational network stands at around ₹4,370 crore.

The expansion significantly increases the geographical reach of metro services in Indore and establishes a stronger public transport connection between the Super Corridor and important areas towards Malviya Nagar.

Passenger Services Begin

The expanded metro corridor will operate from 9 am to 7 pm, with trains scheduled at a frequency of 15 minutes. More than 80 trips are planned every day, providing regular public transport services for commuters.

The operational expansion builds on the first 6-km priority section, which entered passenger service on May 31, 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had officially inaugurated the initial section through video conferencing from Bhopal.

The latest extension marks a substantial increase in the operational footprint of the system within a little over a year of the opening of the initial section.

Boost to Indore’s Urban Mobility

The expansion is expected to provide commuters with a faster and more reliable alternative to road-based transportation while helping address congestion and traffic pressure in the rapidly growing city.

Union Minister Manohar Lal had earlier highlighted the wider benefits of the metro expansion, stating that improved connectivity would support industry, trade and citizen services, while saving travel time, enabling safer journeys and reducing congestion.

He also highlighted the importance of future connectivity between the metro network and key transport and activity centres, including the railway station and airport, which could further strengthen seamless urban mobility in Indore.

According to Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, the expansion marks an important transition for Indore’s public transport system.

“The expansion from a 6-km priority section to a 17-km operational network is a significant step in establishing metro as an important component of Indore’s urban mobility system. The next priority should be seamless integration with the railway station, airport, bus services and other modes so that the benefits of the metro network extend well beyond the stations themselves.”

Metro Expansion Supports Ease of Living

The development of Indore Metro is part of the broader effort to establish modern mass rapid transit systems in major Indian cities and provide sustainable alternatives to private vehicle-based travel.

With 16 stations now operational, the network has created a substantially larger passenger catchment area compared with the initial priority section. The expansion is also expected to support the city’s economic growth by improving accessibility to commercial, residential and employment areas.

The inauguration of Priority Corridor-2 therefore represents more than the addition of 11 km of metro infrastructure. It marks the beginning of a broader phase of network expansion and multimodal connectivity for Indore, with future links to major transport hubs expected to further strengthen the city’s public transportation system.
