The Quiet Engine: Incredible Story of 40 Years of Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC)
Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Thane Integral Ring Metro Project has reached a major execution milestone with Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) awarding a ₹1,415 crore civil construction contract for a critical elevated viaduct package. The Letter of Acceptance (LoA) was issued on December 10, 2025, to a joint venture between Kalpataru Projects International Limited and H.G. Infra Engineering Limited, marking the formal start of large-scale construction for Thane’s first metro network.
The joint venture has been constituted specifically for this project, with Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL) as the lead member holding a 60 percent stake, while H.G. Infra Engineering Limited (HGINFRA) holds the remaining 40 percent share. The consortium emerged as the lowest bidder for the package, which involves the design and construction of a 20.527-kilometre elevated metro viaduct, forming the backbone of the Thane Integral Ring Metro.
The awarded package covers the design and construction of the elevated metro viaduct from the underground ramp to Balkum Naka, including the Depot Approach Viaduct and three complex special spans. These special spans are engineered to navigate dense urban conditions, existing road corridors, and utility networks, reflecting the technical complexity of building metro infrastructure in a highly congested city like Thane.
Executed under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) model, the contract carries a 36-month completion timeline. The scope includes detailed engineering, procurement of materials, construction, quality assurance, and readiness for commissioning. Once completed, this viaduct will support uninterrupted metro operations along the circular alignment, significantly improving intra-city mobility.
The Thane Integral Ring Metro Project is envisioned as a 29-kilometre circular corridor designed to ease pressure on the city’s heavily congested road network and improve connectivity between key residential, commercial, and transit zones. Thane, one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing urban centres, has long struggled with traffic congestion and rising vehicular density, making high-capacity mass transit a critical requirement.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The award of this ₹1,415-crore viaduct contract is a decisive step in translating the Thane Integral Ring Metro from plans to reality. This corridor will play a transformational role in decongesting roads, improving last-mile connectivity, and enabling sustainable urban growth in Thane and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.”
Kalpataru Projects International Limited brings decades of experience in complex infrastructure projects across metro rail, power transmission, and urban infrastructure, while H.G. Infra Engineering Limited has established itself as a reliable EPC player in highways and metro civil works. Their combined expertise is expected to support timely execution and adherence to quality benchmarks set by Maha-Metro.
For Maha-Metro, the award reinforces its aggressive expansion strategy across Maharashtra, following metro development in Nagpur and Pune, and with future plans in Nashik and Thane. Mobilisation activities are expected to begin shortly after the formal agreement signing and site handover.
Once operational, the elevated corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time, cut vehicular emissions, and integrate seamlessly with future metro and regional transport networks in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The ₹1,415-crore viaduct package stands as a critical building block in delivering modern, reliable, and sustainable urban mobility for Thane’s growing population.
The project now firmly moves into the execution phase, bringing Thane closer to a long-awaited metro-led transport transformation.
