Kolkata Metro to use Aluminum-made Third Rail System first time in India

Kolkata, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant move mirroring the practices of global metro networks such as Singapore, London, Moscow, Berlin, Munich, and Istanbul, the North-South Metro Line is poised to undergo a transformative modernization. The conventional pure-steel third rail that currently powers the line will be replaced with a steel-encased aluminum variant.

This forward-looking modernization initiative, scheduled to be implemented over a two-year period, holds the promise of substantial benefits for the Metro Railway, which is grappling with financial constraints. The projected outcome of this endeavor is a remarkable annual saving of Rs 1 crore in power expenditures.

The third rail, a pivotal component in metro systems, serves as an electrical conduit, delivering power to trains traversing the tracks. As part of this shift towards innovation, the North-South Line will transition from the traditional pure steel third rail to a modern steel-encased aluminum alternative.

A significant aspect of this transformation is the anticipated energy efficiency gains. With the introduction of aluminum-encased third rails, the Metro Railway is poised to achieve an impressive 84% reduction in energy consumption, equivalent to a substantial Rs 1 crore annual saving. This transition is not only economically prudent but also contributes to a greener and more sustainable operational landscape.

The replacement process will unfold in two distinct phases, involving the installation of highly conductive aluminum rails encased in stainless steel. These new rails boast enhanced energy efficiency attributes, generating less heat than their steel counterparts. The ripple effects of this transition are manifold, from cost savings to improved environmental performance.

However, this modernization journey involves more than just the physical replacement of rails. The transformation will necessitate the replacement of the third rail current collectors (TRCC) of the Metro rakes. This comprehensive approach ensures that the initiative's energy conservation objectives are fully realized. Notably, the modern TRCC-equipped BEML-made rakes of the East-West Metro will play a pivotal role in achieving the conservation goals.

The overarching benefits of this aluminum-based third rail system extend beyond energy conservation. Its low-maintenance characteristics contribute to operational efficiency, while its capacity to prevent voltage drop translates to enhanced acceleration rates, fostering a smoother and more efficient commuting experience for passengers.

In essence, the North-South Metro Line's transition to an aluminum-encased third rail stands as a testament to the Metro Railway's commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. As the system embraces modern technologies akin to renowned global metro networks, it positions itself for a future that is not only economically prudent but also environmentally conscious.
