Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has embarked on the testing and commissioning phase for the new Rolling Stock of the Mumbai Monorail, signaling a promising shift towards improved efficiency and service quality.
Commissioning Medha-SMH Rail Pvt. Ltd for the production of the new fleet underscores MMRDA's commitment to enhancing public transportation in the city. The trial tests for the newly supplied 4-coach Rolling Stock on the Mumbai Monorail Track have commenced, marking a significant milestone in the project's progress.
In March of this year, MMRDA received the first train set from Telangana-based Medha Servo Drives, in collaboration with Malaysia-based SMH Rail, following a lucrative contract valued at Rs 700 crore. The contract aims to deliver 40 cars, which will be configured into ten four-car trains. Notably, the transition to a new manufacturer comes as the previous provider, Malaysian company Scomi, ceased servicing the older Monorail rakes in Mumbai. Officials highlight the advanced technology integrated into the new Monorail rakes, promising an enhanced riding experience with a durable metal body akin to Metro trains and increased frequency.
Before these trains can be introduced for public use, they undergo rigorous trials conducted by the manufacturers. Subsequently, the Commissioner of Railway Safety provides the final approval. Once operational, commuters can anticipate a significant improvement in service frequency, with intervals reduced from the current 20-25 minutes to just five minutes.
In January 2024, MMRDA took a strategic step by merging the Monorail Project Implementation Unit with the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation. This consolidation aimed to address the financial challenges confronting the Monorail system. Despite efforts to revitalize the service, financial struggles persist, with projected losses reaching ₹529 crore in 2023-24, up from ₹250 crore in the previous fiscal year. These losses primarily stem from the procurement of new rakes and the construction costs associated with the Mahalaxmi to Jacob’s Circle travelator. Meanwhile, ticketing revenue remains modest, estimated at ₹13.6 crore.
The introduction of technologically advanced coaches represents a significant leap forward in the revitalization of the Mumbai Monorail service. With improved efficiency, enhanced riding experience, and increased frequency, commuters can anticipate a more reliable and convenient mode of transportation in the city.
Balaji Railroad Systems Pvt Ltd (BARSYL) plays a pivotal role as the Rolling Stock Procurement Consultant associated with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for this project.
As Mumbai gears up for the integration of new Rolling Stock into its Monorail system, the city anticipates a transformation in its public transportation landscape. With cutting-edge technology and a commitment to service excellence, the revitalized Monorail service promises commuters a smoother, more efficient, and enjoyable travel experience.
