Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Maharashtra government has officially approved the construction of Mumbai Metro Line 8, also known as the Gold Line, which will provide a crucial link between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The project will be developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, a move formalized through a government resolution (GR) issued on Monday by the Urban Development Department.
Currently, there is no mass rapid transit system (MRTS) directly connecting the two airports. Metro Line 8, part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) ambitious Metro Master Plan, aims to fill this critical gap in Mumbai's transportation infrastructure.
A Landmark Project for Mumbai’s Transport System
The Rs 15,000-crore Metro Line 8 project is expected to serve approximately 9 lakh passengers daily, making it a key addition to Mumbai’s metro network. This will be the second metro line in the city to be developed under the PPP model, following the successful implementation of Metro Line 1 (Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar), which has been operational since 2014.
The new Metro line will primarily pass through Navi Mumbai, with the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) tasked with preparing the detailed project report (DPR). Cidco, which is also responsible for the development of NMIA, will collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure the timely completion and approval of the project.
Improving Connectivity Between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai
Metro Line 8 aims to significantly improve connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, reducing travel time between the two airports and easing the growing passenger demand at both hubs. During a high-level meeting in May 2024, the Maharashtra chief secretary stressed the importance of establishing a continuous Metro corridor to enhance operational efficiency and ensure smoother connectivity between the two regions.
The proposed route will span 35 km, combining both underground and elevated sections. The Metro will run underground from Andheri to the Eastern Express Highway at Ghatkopar before transitioning to an elevated track along the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road until Mankhurd. Once completed, Metro Line 8 is expected to alleviate road traffic congestion and improve accessibility for travelers across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Revised Plan for Metro 8
Originally, MMRDA planned for the Metro Line 8 to terminate at Mankhurd, where it would connect with the proposed CSMT-Panvel high-speed rail corridor. However, the Ministry of Railways recently shelved the CSMT-Panvel corridor plan. In light of this, the current plan includes an 8.5-km loop from Seawoods to the NMIA, enhancing the connectivity between the two airports and streamlining transportation for both passengers and commuters.
This new Metro line represents a significant step forward in addressing the transport needs of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, offering a sustainable, efficient solution to the region’s growing infrastructure demands. With the project now officially approved, the development of Metro Line 8 is set to transform connectivity and support the expansion of both airports.
