MMRDA issues Global Rolling Stock and System tender for Mumbai Metro Line 5

Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited bids for the supply of crucial systems for Mumbai Metro's Line-5 (Orange Line) under Package CA-241. This move comes on the heels of the re-invitation of bids for Line-4's systems, demonstrating the authority's commitment to advancing multiple metro projects in the region.

The tender notice for Line-5's major systems encompasses the supply of the following critical components:

  • Rolling Stock: The procurement includes 22 trains of 6 coaches each, totaling 132 coaches.

  • CBTC Signaling & Train Control (S&TC): Cutting-edge communication-based signaling and train control systems.

  • Telecommunication: Comprehensive telecommunication infrastructure.

  • Platform Screen Doors (PSDs): Installation of platform screen doors for enhanced safety.

  • Depot Machinery & Plant (M&P): Machinery and plant equipment for the Kasheli Depot.

Funding and Contract Details

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is slated to fund the design and build component of this contract with a proposed USD 186.57 million loan. The contract spans 50 weeks (1 year), with MMRDA committing to fund the comprehensive maintenance component over 17 years. This maintenance period includes 2 years of Defects Liability Maintenance.

Scope of Work

MMRDA's scope for this contract encompasses the design, manufacture, supply, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of Rolling Stock, Communication-Based Signaling & Train Control, Telecommunication, Platform Screen Doors Systems, and Depot Machinery & Plant. This is part of Line 5's (Phase 1 – Kapurbawadi – Kasheli – Dhamankar Naka & Phase 2 – Dhamankar Naka – Bhiwandi – Kalyan APMC) of the Mumbai Metro Rail Project.

As per the tender's schedule, the prototype train for Line-5's Phase 1 must be delivered at week 56 after contract signing, followed by the next 2 trains at week 78 and the subsequent 9 trains at week 96. For Line-5's Phase 2, the first two trains should be delivered at week 180, with the next 8 trains at week 196 (3.75 years) from contract signing.

The initiation of bidding for Line-5 marks a crucial step in MMRDA's rolling stock procurement process for all under-construction metro lines, including Line-4 (Green Line) and Line-6 (Pink Line). This move signifies the authority's commitment to advancing multiple metro projects, contributing to the enhancement of Mumbai's public transportation infrastructure.
