Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major stride toward enhancing Mumbai’s suburban connectivity, key civil works on the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Green Line) have been successfully completed, paving the way for system integration and trial runs. Two trial trains have also arrived in Thane, marking a significant milestone in preparations for testing on the initial stretch.
Metro Line 4 is a 35.3-km elevated corridor connecting Wadala in South-Central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane, with 32 stations across densely populated residential, commercial, and industrial zones. The completion of core civil infrastructure—including viaducts, station platforms, and depot-level facilities—now sets the stage for the next phase: systems installation and integrated testing.
The two six-car Metropolis trainsets, manufactured under the Make in India initiative by Alstom at its Sri City facility, were recently transported to the Mandale Depot. These state-of-the-art driverless trains, capable of operating at speeds up to 85 km/h, will soon begin dynamic trials over completed stretches to assess track alignment, power systems, and safety protocols.
Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed that Phase 1—spanning from Wadala to Mulund—is expected to be operational by mid-2026, subject to successful trial runs and regulatory clearances. Work is concurrently underway to expedite remaining civil works and system integration for the full corridor up to Kasarvadavali.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, applauded the progress, stating, “With civil works nearing completion and trial trains arriving, Mumbai Metro Line 4 is entering a transformative phase. This corridor will serve as a vital north-south artery, easing traffic congestion and offering commuters a safe, efficient, and sustainable alternative.”
Metro Line 4 will provide interconnectivity with other metro lines including Line 2B, Line 5, Line 6, and Line 11, as well as key suburban rail routes. It is expected to drastically reduce travel time between Wadala and Thane from the current 1.5 hours to just 30 minutes, supporting over 10 lakh daily commuters once fully operational.
The integrated systems package for Line 4—including rolling stock, CBTC signalling, platform screen doors, telecom, and depot equipment—is being delivered through a public-private partnership by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Alstom, with maintenance services for the first five years post-commissioning.
As Mumbai's metro network rapidly expands toward the 300 km mark, Line 4 is emerging as a critical spine that will connect residential suburbs, industrial zones, and employment hubs—significantly contributing to the city’s goal of becoming a multi-modal transit-first metropolis.
