PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Thripunithura extension of Kochi Metro Phase 1B

Kochi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a virtual inauguration event on March 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final phase of the first stage of Kochi Metro, Phase 1B, linking the metro line to Thripunithura in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. This symbolic connection, spanning over 28 kilometers between Aluva and Thripunithura with 25 stations, represents a significant milestone in enhancing Kerala's metro infrastructure.

The Thripunithura station, serving as the culmination point of the first phase, stands out with its unique design inspired by the cultural heritage of the town just outside Kochi. Spanning an impressive 1.35 lakh sq ft, the metro station aims to become a cultural attraction, housing a dance museum to captivate tourists. This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to leverage Thripunithura's potential as a tourist destination.

Minister of Industries P. Rajeeve, speaking at the inauguration function, hinted at the Kerala government's consideration of linking the Nedumbassery airport to GIFT City at Ayampuzha near Angamaly. This proposed link is expected to enhance the prospects of the Ayampuzha facility, becoming the second GIFT City in the country after Gujarat. The integration of the metro system into this development reinforces its role in shaping Kerala's future connectivity landscape.

Looking ahead, the second phase of the metro project is set to connect Palarivattom and Infopark at Kakkanad. The projected completion for this phase is the first half of 2026, offering a promising timeline for further expansion and improved connectivity in the region.

The government's plan to declare Thripunithura Athachamayam as a Statewide event ahead of Onam celebrations demonstrates the town's increasing significance as a tourist hub. The newly inaugurated metro station at Thripunithura aligns seamlessly with this vision, contributing to Kerala's transformation into a singular tourist destination.

The Thripunithura terminal station, covering an extensive 1.35 lakh sq feet, sets itself apart with three platforms, a VIP lounge, a spacious commercial area, and over 30 digital display boards. Adorned with a 'royal' theme, reflecting the historic importance of Thripunithura as the seat of the erstwhile Cochin royal family, the station offers a unique and immersive experience for passengers.

The ticket fare from Aluva to Thripunithura is Rs 75, with an inaugural offer allowing commuters to travel for just Rs 60 till SN Junction. This reduction from the original ticket charge of Rs 60 from Aluva to Petta reflects the commitment to making metro travel accessible and attractive for passengers.

Metro pillars adorned with 'Athachamayam' themed mural paintings, traditional engravings on hand railings, chandeliers, a large portrait of the erstwhile Kochi king Rajashri Rama Varma, intricate wooden works on the entrance door, and a dance museum showcasing Kerala's traditional dance forms all contribute to the station's cultural enrichment.

The inauguration of the Thripunithura line marks not just a physical extension of the Kochi Metro but a celebration of cultural heritage and connectivity. As the metro continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to Kerala's commitment to modern infrastructure intertwined with its rich cultural tapestry.
