Bengaluru, India (Rail & Metro Today): The Railway Board has granted in-principle approval for the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling and train control system for Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) Pink Line and the entire Blue Line Phase 2A and 2B corridor up to Kempegowda International Airport, marking a key milestone for Bengaluru’s upcoming metro network.
The approval is particularly significant for the Pink Line, where signalling clearance was among the final major regulatory milestones before passenger operations can begin.
The Pink Line, connecting Kalena Agrahara with Tavarekere, is nearing the final stages of commissioning. BMRCL has been pursuing the approval process with the Railway Board and Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) over the past month to expedite the signalling clearance.
With the in-principle CBTC approval now in place, BMRCL can proceed with the remaining statutory and safety procedures required before opening the corridor to passengers.
According to BMRCL, the remaining steps include obtaining interim speed certification from RDSO, statutory inspection of the rolling stock by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS/CCRS), conducting trial runs and subsequently completing the final statutory inspection and clearance for opening the line for public service.
Significantly, the Railway Board's approval also covers the Blue Line Phase 2A and 2B, extending from Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport.
BMRCL said that while the CBTC clearance was a pending milestone for the Pink Line, the approval for the Blue Line has been secured well ahead of its proposed commissioning schedule.
The early signalling approval is expected to facilitate the subsequent testing, validation and safety certification processes for the airport corridor.
CBTC is an advanced signalling and train-control technology that enables continuous communication between trains and the control system. It can support closer train headways, improve operational efficiency and enhance the capacity of metro corridors.
For Bengaluru, deployment of CBTC across the Pink and Blue lines will provide an advanced signalling framework for two strategically important corridors of the city's expanding Metro network.
BMRCL said it will continue coordinating with the Railway Board, RDSO, railway safety authorities and other concerned agencies to complete the remaining approvals and certification procedures at the earliest.
The development brings the Kalena Agrahara–Tavarekere Pink Line closer to passenger operations, while simultaneously establishing the signalling framework for the Central Silk Board–Kempegowda International Airport Blue Line.
The approval is therefore an important step in Bengaluru's ongoing Metro expansion, particularly as the city prepares to strengthen connectivity between its residential areas, commercial districts, major employment hubs and the international airport.
