On July 23, 2024, BMRCL awarded four key geotechnical soil investigation contracts, marking a significant step in the 44.65-kilometer expansion of the metro network.

The updated information on BMRCL's website reveals that SECON Pvt. Ltd. has been awarded two of these contracts, while Manglam Consultancy Services – Hyderabad and Myrtle Project and Consultancy Pvt. Ltd. have each secured one contract. Each contract is set with a five-month deadline, underscoring BMRCL's commitment to advancing the project efficiently.

Phase 3 Expansion Overview

Phase 3 of the Bangalore Metro project introduces two new lines: a 32.15-kilometer Orange Line and a 12.5-kilometer line. The Orange Line will connect Kempapura to JP Nagar 4th Phase via 22 stations along the Outer Ring Road (ORR), while the second line will extend from Kadabagere to Hosahalli, covering nine stations. Both lines will be elevated and situated on the western side of Bengaluru.

The geotechnical investigations covered by these contracts are vital for the successful design and construction of the metro infrastructure. The information gathered will guide the design of viaducts and stations, ensuring that these structures are built on a robust foundation. The results from these investigations will be included in the civil construction tender documents, aiding infrastructure companies in making more informed financial bids. This will help in selecting the appropriate machinery, methods, and technology during the construction phase.

Project Background and Approval

Bangalore Metro Phase 3 has been under planning since 2015, with initial proposals outlining 105.55 kilometers of new routes. By 2020, BMRCL refined the project scope to focus on the two lines currently in development. The project has received approval from Karnataka’s state government and is now awaiting final approval from the Central Government's cabinet.

The awarding of these geotechnical contracts represents a significant milestone for BMRCL and demonstrates its ongoing commitment to expanding Bangalore’s metro system. The geotechnical surveys will provide the essential data required for the next stages of the project, paving the way for a more connected and efficient metro network in Bengaluru.

As the project progresses, these efforts will contribute to a more accessible and sustainable urban environment, meeting the growing transportation needs of the city.
