Siemens wins Telecom Contract worth ₹198 crore for Nagpur Metro Phase 2 Project

Nagpur, India (Metro Rail Today): Siemens Ltd. has been declared as lowest bidder for the telecommunications contract of Nagpur Metro Phase 2 Project after emerging as the lowest bidder for the TL-01 package. This marks a significant step in the expansion of Nagpur’s metro network, with the project aiming to enhance the communication systems crucial for the smooth operation of the new metro lines. The announcement was made by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (Maha Metro) at the end of October 2024.

Scope of the Telecom Contract (TL-01)

The contract, under the TL-01 package, encompasses the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the telecommunications systems for Nagpur Metro’s Phase 2. This includes key telecom infrastructure such as:

  • Signal and communication systems
  • Network integration
  • Passenger information systems
  • Emergency communication systems

These advanced telecom solutions are crucial for ensuring efficient and safe operations of the metro, enhancing the overall passenger experience, and enabling real-time communication between the stations, trains, and control centers.

Funding and Timeline

The project is being funded through a US$200 million loan (approximately ₹1,678 crore) from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which was approved in July 2024. This significant financial backing underscores the importance of the Nagpur Metro Phase 2 expansion in improving public transportation and urban mobility in the city.

Maha-Metro invited bids for the telecom contract in June 2024, with a project timeline of 994 days (approximately 2.72 years) for completion. The scope of work will be completed within this period, ensuring that telecom systems are ready for integration as Phase 2 of the metro network progresses.

Bidding Process and Financials

In the bidding process, two companies—Siemens Ltd. and Larsen & Toubro Technology Services Ltd.—were shortlisted after technical bids were opened in September 2024. The financial bids were opened later, revealing the following offers:

  • Siemens Ltd.: ₹197.93 crore
  • L&T Technology Services Ltd.: ₹204.93 crore

With Siemens submitting the lowest bid, the company has been awarded the contract, subject to any final approvals or evaluations from Maha Metro.

Phase 2 of Nagpur Metro: An Overview

Nagpur Metro Phase 2 will be a 43.8 km extension of the city’s metro network, connecting key areas of the city and significantly improving public transportation options. The telecom infrastructure is a critical element of this expansion, supporting safe and efficient operations.

The Phase 2 project will integrate various technologies to improve communication systems across metro stations, depots, and trains, ensuring better operational management, real-time updates for passengers, and enhanced safety protocols.

Other Ongoing Projects and Tenders

This contract for the telecom system is part of the broader Phase 2 development of the Nagpur Metro, which also includes several civil packages. Maha-Metro is also progressing with other tenders under the ADB funding. One such ongoing tender, Package C-09, involves the construction of 8 elevated metro stations along Reach-1A, which spans key locations such as Ashokvan, Dongargaon, Mohgaon, Meghdoot, CIDCO Butibori Police Station, MHADA Colony, MIDC KEC, and MIDC ESR.

As per recent reports, MMRCL opened the technical bids for Package C-09 today, and it seems there was only one bidder for this civil contract. Further updates on this package are expected soon.

Impact of Telecom Systems on Metro Expansion

The telecom systems being implemented by Siemens Ltd. are not only vital for Nagpur Metro Phase 2 but are also a key enabler of smart city initiatives. These systems will support the integration of digital technologies like train management systems, security monitoring through CCTV, and smart ticketing systems, making the metro experience more seamless and efficient for passengers.

The expansion of the telecom infrastructure for Nagpur Metro Phase 2 reflects the city's vision of modernizing its transportation systems and improving urban mobility. The advanced telecom systems will also ensure that the metro is fully integrated into the city’s broader digital infrastructure, enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

Looking Ahead

With Siemens set to begin work on the telecom systems, Nagpur Metro Phase 2 is poised to move closer to its goal of becoming a key transportation backbone for the city. As construction progresses, other essential components of the project, including civil works and station development, will continue to take shape. Once completed, Phase 2 of Nagpur Metro will significantly ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and provide a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to road transport for residents.

The successful implementation of Siemens Ltd.'s telecom systems will be a crucial step toward ensuring the reliable operation of Nagpur’s expanding metro network, bringing the city closer to its goal of a fully integrated and modern public transportation system.
