DMRC begins Construction work on Inderlok–Indraprastha Corridor under Delhi Metro Phase 4 Expansion
Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a move aimed at expanding Chennai’s metro network and strengthening last-mile connectivity, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has appointed M/s Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for two strategic corridors — the Extension of Corridor 4 from Lighthouse to High Court and a new Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery Corridor.
Project 1: Extension of Corridor 4 – Lighthouse to High Court
The proposed ~7 km extension will link Lighthouse station to High Court, running along Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach. The alignment will not only serve thousands of daily commuters but also cater to tourists and visitors to the Secretariat, enhancing connectivity across the city’s eastern waterfront.
Project 2: Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery Corridor
The envisaged 21 km corridor will integrate Chennai’s southern suburbs — including Tambaram, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, and Velachery — with Guindy Metro station on Corridor 1. The alignment is designed to enable seamless multimodal integration at Tambaram (suburban rail hub), Medavakkam, Velachery (MRTS), and Guindy (Metro & suburban rail).
Contract and Scope
Consultant: M/s Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd
Value: ₹38.20 lakh for Corridor 4 extension DPR; ₹96.19 lakh for Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery DPR
Study Duration: 120 days for each assignment
Scope: Comprehensive assessment of alignment options, ridership forecasts, integration with existing transport systems, environmental considerations, and technical/financial feasibility.
The agreement was signed in the presence of M.A. Siddique, IAS, Managing Director, CMRL, between T. Archunan, Director (Projects), CMRL, and Parveen Kumar, Senior Vice President, Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd. Senior CMRL officials including T. Livingstone Eliazer, Smt. Rekha Prakash, and Dr. D. Jebaselwin Gladson attended the event.
CMRL officials highlighted that these DPRs will form the foundation for future-ready, sustainable mobility solutions in Chennai, aligned with the city’s growth patterns and the state’s urban transport policy.
“Both of these DPR initiatives reflect forward-thinking urban planning. The Lighthouse–High Court extension will boost accessibility to Chennai’s cultural and administrative hubs, while the Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery corridor will be a game-changer for suburban integration. By factoring in multimodal connectivity from the planning stage, CMRL is setting a benchmark for how Indian cities should approach metro expansion,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group.
Once the DPRs are finalised, CMRL is expected to seek state and central approvals before moving into the tendering and execution phases. These projects, when implemented, are anticipated to significantly improve travel efficiency, reduce congestion, and contribute to Chennai’s sustainable urban growth.
