Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Tamil Nadu government has given in-principle approval for a major Chennai Metro Rail expansion, greenlighting a new corridor that will connect Koyambedu to Pattabiram (Outer Ring Road). Spanning 21.76 kilometers, the new metro line is projected to cost ₹9,928.33 crore at 2025 prices.
The proposed corridor will feature 19 metro stations, including key areas such as Ambattur Estate, Dunlop, OT, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Hindu College, and Pattabiram. It also includes the construction of three flyovers to ensure seamless traffic flow and better integration with Chennai’s urban transport infrastructure.
According to a Government Order issued by the State Special Initiatives Department, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has been accepted as of April 28, 2025. The corridor was initially planned from Koyambedu to Avadi, but has since been extended to Pattabiram to boost regional connectivity and support infrastructure development in Chennai’s fast-growing western suburbs.
The project will be funded through a combination of Union Government equity support and external loans from bilateral and multilateral agencies. Notably, ₹464 crore of the total estimate has been allocated for the highways component, including the construction of the three flyovers.
The state government has forwarded the DPR to the Central Government for final approval and funding arrangements. Once cleared, the project is expected to significantly enhance metro connectivity across Chennai’s western corridor and link vital transit and commercial zones, including the ELCOT facility near the Outer Ring Road in Pattabiram.
