GMRC to appoint General Engineering Consultants for Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A, 2B & 3A

Gandhinagar, India (Metro Rail Today): Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has taken a decisive step toward fast-tracking Ahmedabad Metro’s expansion by inviting bids for the selection of a General Engineering Consultant (GEC) covering Phase 2A, Phase 2B and Phase 3A. The move indicates a clear transition from planning to execution for multiple strategic corridors across the city and adjoining Gandhinagar region.

Issued on April 1, 2026, the tender consolidates three key phases under a single consultancy framework, reflecting GMRC’s intent to execute these projects in parallel rather than in sequence. The bid submission deadline has been set for May 22, 2026, with further details expected upon release of the full tender document.

Three Strategic Corridors Under One Umbrella

The bundled consultancy mandate spans three distinct yet interconnected corridors. Phase 2A focuses on airport connectivity, a critical component given Ahmedabad’s rising prominence as a commercial and aviation hub. Phase 2B will extend metro connectivity to GIFT City, India’s international financial services centre, which is witnessing rapid growth in corporate and banking activity.

Phase 3A includes the extension from Thaltej Gam to Godhavi, a corridor that has already seen progress with the recent tendering of detailed design consultancy services. Together, these phases represent a comprehensive expansion strategy aimed at enhancing urban and regional mobility.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The decision to appoint a single General Engineering Consultant for multiple phases reflects a strategic shift toward integrated project delivery. This approach can significantly improve coordination, reduce timelines and ensure uniform standards across corridors, which is essential for building a cohesive and efficient metro network.”

Integrated Planning for Faster Delivery

By clubbing the three phases under one GEC, GMRC is placing strong emphasis on streamlined planning, design oversight and execution management. The selected consultant will play a critical role in coordinating between multiple stakeholders, ensuring adherence to timelines and maintaining quality standards across all project components.

This approach is expected to accelerate implementation while minimising fragmentation in project management, a key factor in delivering large-scale infrastructure efficiently.

Boost to Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth

The expansion corridors are strategically aligned with key growth drivers, including airport connectivity, financial hubs and emerging urban clusters. The integration of these corridors will not only improve intra-city mobility but also strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, supporting economic development and urban expansion.

As Ahmedabad Metro continues to evolve, the latest tender underscores the city’s ambition to build a robust, future-ready transit network. With multiple corridors advancing simultaneously, the focus now shifts to efficient execution and timely delivery.

The appointment of a General Engineering Consultant will be a crucial milestone in this journey, laying the foundation for the next phase of Ahmedabad’s urban mobility transformation.
