Agra, India (Metro Rail Today): The Agra Metro project has entered a crucial phase of testing, with trial runs commencing on the up line between Bijlighar Square, Mankameshwar Station and ISBT Station. The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) initiated the latest round of trials on Wednesday, with metro trains operating at speeds ranging between 20 and 30 km/h as part of initial system checks.
Officials confirmed that signalling and operational tests will now be conducted on a daily basis along the up line, covering a distance of approximately 6 kilometres between Mankameshwar and ISBT stations. This marks a steady progression from earlier trial runs conducted about a month ago, when testing was carried out over two days on the same stretch.
Gradual Speed Increase and System Validation Underway
As part of the testing protocol, metro trains will gradually increase speeds from the current range to up to 90 km/h in the coming days. These trials are aimed at validating critical systems such as signalling, track alignment, communication systems and overall operational safety before passenger services commence.
UPMRC officials have indicated that similar trials on the down line will begin shortly, ensuring full readiness of both tracks for commercial operations. The ongoing tests are a key step toward ensuring seamless and safe metro operations in the historic city.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The commencement of regular metro trials in Agra reflects the steady progress of urban transit projects in Tier-2 cities across India. Rigorous testing and phased speed enhancements are critical to ensuring safety, reliability and operational efficiency. Such developments highlight the growing focus on expanding modern mobility solutions beyond metropolitan cities.”
Operations Targeted for June-End Launch
According to officials, metro operations on both the up and down lines between Mankameshwar and ISBT stations are expected to begin in the last week of June. This will mark the operational debut of a key section of the Agra Metro, significantly improving connectivity for residents and tourists alike.
The corridor holds particular importance due to its proximity to major urban nodes and its role in easing traffic congestion in busy city areas. Once operational, it is expected to provide a faster, more reliable alternative to road transport.
Strengthening Urban Mobility in Emerging Cities
The Agra Metro project is part of a broader push to enhance public transport infrastructure in smaller cities, aligning with India’s vision of inclusive and sustainable urban growth. With trials now underway and commercial operations on the horizon, the project is set to transform the city’s mobility landscape while supporting tourism and economic activity.
As UPMRC accelerates testing and system readiness, the Agra Metro moves closer to delivering a modern, efficient and commuter-friendly transport system for one of India’s most iconic cities.
