Revised DPR submitted for ₹12,937.23 crore Bhakti Shakti–Chakan Corridor on Pune Metro Rail Project

Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has submitted a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Bhakti Shakti–Chakan metro corridor to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), marking a significant milestone in the region’s urban mobility planning. The updated DPR, submitted on February 26, 2026, outlines an expanded and reconfigured metro corridor designed to better serve one of India’s most industrially active regions.

The revised plan replaces the earlier proposal and substantially enhances the project’s scope, increasing the corridor length from 42.26 km to 47.21 km and raising the number of stations from 31 to 34. The project cost has also been revised upward to ₹12,937.23 crore, reflecting the expanded alignment and improved infrastructure planning.

Expanded Alignment to Cover Key Industrial and Residential Hubs

The fully elevated corridor will connect major residential zones such as Wakad, Pimple Saudagar and Ravet with critical industrial clusters including Bhosari, Moshi and the Chakan MIDC belt. The revised alignment incorporates previously underserved but high-demand areas like Bhosari MIDC, Landewadi and Bhosari Gaon, addressing long-standing commuter needs and enhancing accessibility across the region.

A key highlight of the DPR is the integration of a 17 km stretch between Bhosari and Chakan with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) infrastructure, indicating a coordinated approach toward multi-agency development.

Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The revised DPR for the Bhakti Shakti–Chakan corridor reflects a more comprehensive and demand-driven approach to metro planning. By expanding coverage to key industrial and residential zones, the project is well-positioned to significantly improve commuter mobility while supporting economic growth in the Pune metropolitan region.”

High Ridership Potential and Future Expansion Vision

The corridor is expected to witness strong ridership growth, with projections indicating daily passenger traffic rising from 3.22 lakh in 2032 to nearly 7.80 lakh by 2062. This underscores the corridor’s importance as a long-term mass transit backbone for the Pimpri-Chinchwad-Chakan belt.

The DPR also includes provisions for future extensions beyond both ends of the corridor. Plans to connect Talawade MIDC and Kharabwadi from the Bhakti Shakti side, along with a potential link toward Shewalewadi via Bhujbal Chowk, demonstrate a forward-looking strategy aimed at accommodating future urban expansion.

Robust Funding Model to Support Execution

The project will be financed through a multi-layered funding structure, with around 60 percent of the investment expected from external bilateral and multilateral loans. The Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra will each contribute approximately 15.43 percent as equity, while the remaining share will come from local bodies, including PCMC.

This diversified funding approach is expected to ensure financial viability while enabling timely project execution.

Decongesting Roads and Boosting Industrial Efficiency

Once operational, the Bhakti Shakti–Chakan metro corridor is expected to play a transformative role in reducing traffic congestion across key arterial routes in the region. The Pimpri-Chinchwad-Chakan industrial belt, home to major automotive, engineering and pharmaceutical industries, currently faces significant mobility challenges due to heavy commuter traffic.

The revised DPR will now undergo review and approval by PCMC before moving forward for clearances from the State and Central governments. Upon receiving the necessary approvals, the project will proceed to the tendering and construction stages.

As Pune continues to evolve into a major industrial and urban hub, the Bhakti Shakti–Chakan metro corridor is poised to become a critical infrastructure asset, supporting sustainable mobility and long-term regional growth.
