TBM Azad started tunneling on Kanpur Metro's Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar Section

Kanpur, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development for the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) 'Azad' has reached a crucial milestone with the initiation of its main drive. The machine, responsible for constructing a tunnel on the 'upline' of the Kanpur Central to Nayaganj stretch, marked the occasion with a formal puja attended by senior officials of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC).

Since its launch from the Kanpur Central launching shaft, the 'Azad' TBM has already accomplished the construction of a 75-meter (approx.) tunnel, progressing towards Nayaganj. The current focus is on the construction of a 1250-meter-long tunnel from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj on the Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section.

The 'Azad' TBM, operating on the 'Upline,' is poised to play a pivotal role in the tunneling process. With plans to launch another TBM on the 'Downline' in the near future, the Kanpur Metro project is witnessing rapid progress. The 'Azad' TBM, in its initial drive, successfully completed approximately 75 meters of tunnel construction before undergoing necessary connections to the backup system unit.

The backup system unit, akin to the control room of the TBM, contains all auxiliary systems necessary for the machine's functioning. Post the completion of the initial drive, this approximately 95-meter-long unit was lowered into the launching shaft and connected to the shield of the TBM. The backup system unit operates 24/7, allowing engineers to maintain the system in different shifts while moving along with the TBM.

To facilitate the tunnelling process, rail lines are strategically installed to deliver ring segments to the backup system unit. As the TBM advances through the tunnel, motorized trolleys transport ring segments to the backup system unit. Cranes then lift the segments, delivering them to the segment feeder. Simultaneously, the TBM excavates and installs tunnel ring segments, showcasing a seamless process. Motorized trolleys are also employed for the efficient evacuation of soil.

Noteworthy progress is also observed in the Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section, where TBM machines 'Nana' and 'Tatya' are actively involved in tunnel construction. The stretch between Chunniganj to Nayaganj station has already seen the completion of tunnel construction, with preparations underway to launch a tunnel boring machine for the next phase.

As of now, Kanpur Metro's commercial services operate on the 9 km long Priority Corridor (IIT-Motijheel) under the extensive 23.78 km long Corridor-1 (IIT-Naubasta). Beyond the Chunniganj-Nayaganj and Kanpur Central-Transport Nagar underground section, construction work is progressing swiftly in the approximately 5 km long Baradevi-Naubasta elevated section.

The Kanpur Metro project continues to make strides in enhancing urban connectivity and transportation infrastructure. The successful commencement of the main drive for the 'Azad' TBM reflects the dedication and efficiency of the project team. As tunnel construction advances, the Kanpur Metro remains a focal point in the region's development. Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project.
