TBM Ganga records first tunnel breakthrough for Agra Metro Rail Project

Agra, India (Metro Rail Today): The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) on 3rd June 2023 informed that Tunnel Boring Machine nicknamed "TBM Ganga" has acheived its first Tunenl Breakthough at Agra Fort Metro Station in late night of 2nd June.

The Robbins Make Ø6.52m diameter and 95m long Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine which is the 2nd of 4 TBMs to be deployed by Afcons Infrastructure-SAM India Builtwell JV for the construction of 7.93 km underground tunnel between RBS College Ramp and Taj Mahal Ramp for 14.25 km Corridor 1 of Agra Metro Rail Project under contract package AGCC-02.

This TBM was commissioned in April and built 239 rings (334m) from the crossover at Ramleela Maidan to Agra Fort in 48 days. TBM Ganga is building the parallel tunnel with TBM Yamuna which had recorded its first tunnel breakthrough on 25th April 2023.

In March this year, UPMRL had awarded the contract package AGCC-02 worth Rs 1,819.79 crore to  Afcons Infrastructure-SAM India Builtwell JV for building 7.93 km underground tunnel between RBS College Ramp and Taj Mahal Ramp with a 48 month deadline. This package will cover the underground section from chainage 3630.000 to 11564.485 consists of twin tunnels connecting 7 stations at Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, SN Medical College, Agra College, Raja ki Mandi and RBS College.

The scope of work under contract package AGCC-02 includes Design and Construction of Tunnel from start of underground ramp (near Fatehabad Road Metro station) to end of ramp after RBS college Metro station including seven underground metro stations (viz. Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, S.N. Medical college, Agra college, Raja ki Mandi and RBS college) including Architectural finishes, E&M, TVS, ECS etc. on Corridor-1 of Agra MRTS Project.

The 7-km priorty corridor of Agra Metro Rail Project is slotted to open for public by August 2024. The work on this corridor is going at full pace.
