Kolkata, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major boost to its production capabilities, Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd has acquired approximately 40 acres of land on a 99-year lease from the West Bengal government for ₹126.63 crore. The land, located in Kotrung and Bhadrakali mouzas, lies adjacent to the company’s existing 34-acre Uttarpara manufacturing facility in Hooghly district.
The long-term lease agreement was formally signed on July 12, 2025, marking a significant step forward in Titagarh’s strategic expansion to scale up its metro coach and Vande Bharat train production.
In a regulatory filing, the company stated, “The additional land will enable us to establish expanded production infrastructure and dedicated zones for forming, testing, and commissioning of metro coaches and Vande Bharat trains. A test track of adequate length will also be developed for comprehensive performance and safety validation prior to dispatch.”
This acquisition is part of Titagarh's plan to ramp up annual production capacity from the current 300 cars to approximately 850 cars by FY 2027-28. The facility is expected to serve both domestic and export markets, positioning the company as a key player in India’s fast-growing railway manufacturing sector.
To support this aggressive expansion, Titagarh will raise ₹200 crore through a preferential issue of warrants to members of the promoter group, providing a capital infusion for infrastructure and technology enhancement.
As of March 31, 2025, Titagarh Rail Systems reported a consolidated order book of ₹11,200 crore, with 62% of the orders focused on passenger rolling stock and 38% in freight rail systems. In addition, its joint ventures with partners such as Ramkrishna Forgings (wheelsets) and BHEL (Vande Bharat trainsets) hold additional orders worth ₹13,326 crore.
The company’s Uttarpara facility has already emerged as a critical site for India’s indigenous train manufacturing ambitions, especially for the Make in India Vande Bharat initiative and metro systems across Indian cities.
This strategic land acquisition reinforces Titagarh’s long-term vision of becoming a global rail mobility leader and positions it as a vital contributor to India’s next-generation railway infrastructure.
