Trial run commenced on Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 Corridors

Gandhinagar, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant milestone for the Ahmedabad Metro's Phase 2 project, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has initiated trial runs on a 3.3 km elevated section between Dholakuva and Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) in Gandhinagar District. This trial run marks a crucial step in the testing and validation process before the metro becomes operational on this stretch.

Despite ongoing electrification work, GMRC's team conducted the trial run using a Zephir battery-operated railcar mover to pull one of their Hyundai Rotem trains through a segment of the elevated viaduct constructed by Ranjit Buildcon (RBL) as part of the 6.478 km Package C2 connecting GNLU to Gandhinagar's Sector-1.

The primary objective of this trial run was to assess the Schedule of Dimensions (SOD) clearances and observe the train's interaction with the civil structure, ensuring there are no physical obstructions along the route. This meticulous examination is crucial to guarantee the safety and efficiency of the metro system once it commences regular operations.

The track-work for this section commenced in August 2023, led by the VNC – KEC – Emrail Joint Venture. Subsequently, Ranjit Buildcon completed the final U-girder for this section in October 2023, marking significant progress in the construction phase.

While the trial runs have commenced, the full-scale testing is expected to begin in the coming weeks, contingent on GMRC energizing the line's Third Rail. This critical step will enable the operation of the train without external support, facilitating comprehensive testing of various systems, including telecommunication, signaling, train control, and tracks.

As the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 inches closer to operational readiness, the formal commencement of trial runs is anticipated to be a noteworthy event, potentially marked by a formal inauguration event by the Gujarat Government. These trial runs signify a significant stride towards enhancing public transportation connectivity in the region.
